Job Description
The Network Engineer I provides IT infrastructure operational support maintaining, utilizing, and troubleshooting routers, firewalls, and related connectivity hardware for University wide area network ( WAN ), local area network ( LAN ) and/or wireless network (Wi-Fi). This includes software and communication links such as structured cabling and single and multi-mode fiber. The Network Engineer I also performs a variety of maintenance, evaluation, installation, and training tasks to ensure network infrastructure performance meets University and user requirements. Included in the administrative functions are ticket resolution, writing/updating network documentation and procedure manuals.

Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Computer Science or related field.
Experience with enterprise networking including enterprise networked equipment and structured cabling.
Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.
Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications
Two years of professional full-time work experience in IT network design or a data center operations environment.
Current entry level network certificate.
Experience in networking concepts OSI , TCP /IP, Routing and Switching, Palo Alto Networks, Juniper Networks, Extreme Networks, and Cisco Networks.
Experience working in higher education.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of or ability to learn networking concepts such as OSI , TCP /IP, Routing and Switching, Palo Alto Networks, Juniper Networks, Extreme Networks, and Cisco Networks.
Knowledge of wired and wireless networks, connections, wiring and cabling standards, and network management tools and processes.
Knowledge of local and wide area networking, communications, and related hardware and software.
Good interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to gather information from coworkers, users and vendors and relay information to appropriate audiences.
Ability to document routine technical issues effectively, summarizing issues for a range of technical and business clients.
Ability to complete assigned tasks and prioritize routine administrative functions.
Ability to participate in information gathering and systems analysis.
Ability to identify key milestones for small projects and create simple project plans.

Salary Range
$50,000 - $52,887

Job Duties

Essential Job Duties
•Implements network security, including configuring firewalls, managing host security, backup and disaster recovery planning, and adding and deleting users.
•Implements Network Engineer-Architect's designs, and builds the enterprise's computing networks including data centers, wide area networks ( WANS ), and local area networks (LANs).
•Deploys routers, switches, UPSs, and other hardware under direct supervision.
•Assists with finding potential network architecture/design problems and reports problems to higher level Network Engineers for further investigating.
•Assists with creation and maintenance of existing documentation as it relates to network configuration, network mapping, and processes.
•Assists with maintaining procedures for network administration, usage, and disaster recovery.
•Documents work completed using the work order system.
•Provides project tracking to ensure projects and day-to-day work schedules are within established deadlines.
•Installs, monitors, maintains, supports and optimizes routine network hardware, such as wired or wireless network equipment.
•Supports software, systems and communication links such as structured cabling and single and multi-mode fiber.
•Monitors and analyzes network performance and availability against expectations, implements performance tuning, and assists with basic troubleshooting of network problems. Provides network performance statistics and reports.
•Interacts with vendors and service providers to resolve routine network related problems and implement solutions.
•Monitors and audits compliance with enterprise security policies and procedures. Reports violations to supervisor.
•Maintains confidentiality with regard to information being processed, stored or accessed through university network resources.
•Assists system users on use of new network applications/services and other applications. Assists users in maximizing use of networks and computing systems.
•Serves as essential personnel and provides assistance in the event of an emergency on campus.

•Assists in analyzing, evaluating, and recommending new network hardware, software, and communication products for compatibility and applicability.
•Tests new third party hardware/software.
•Stays informed of new developments and technologies.
