POSITION:
Lecturer in Fine Arts: The School of the Arts in the College of the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences invites applications for a part-time lecturer to teach the Music portion of Introduction to Fine Arts (FA 1000). This course is conducted in a large lecture format and team-taught with faculty members from Theatre and Art. The person appointed to this position will teach the Music portion of FA 1000 (with workload equivalent to one 3-unit course). The catalogue description and student learning objectives for this course are as follows: Course Description: "An introduction to the arts; the nature of artistic activity; the methods and materials of each of the arts; and the criteria for evaluating work in each of the arts." Course Objectives: In successfully completing the requirements of this course, students will demonstrate:
• Understanding of artistic structure, including the basic elements and terminology of visual art, music, and theater.
• Understanding of important standards by which artistic works are evaluated.
• Understanding of the similarities and differences in basic concepts, values, concerns and methods of inquiry reflected in the fine arts disciplines.
• Thoughtful perspective on actual observations of artistic performances (students are required to attend campus and off-campus artistic events).
• Understanding of how the arts function in society.
• Broad overview of important social/political implications of the arts throughout history. Minimum Qualifications:
A Master of Music is required. Other minimum qualifications include: Professionally active musician familiar with classical repertoire, current or past practice in a professional classical performance setting, and evidence of successful university-level teaching experience. PREFERRED Qualifications:
A candidate's consideration will be enhanced by providing evidence of experience with a diverse student body, ability to teach basic music theory and the history of music to non-majors, interest and experience in engaging students with real-world orchestral experiences and outreach (e.g., to Bay Area symphony companies), and knowledge of California State Performing Arts Standards for Music.
