Faculty Physician Assistant - Academic

Summary/Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Physician Assistant Program at Des Moines University is seeking faculty members to work in cooperation with the Program Director and other university departments to create and maintain an exceptional educational program for physician assistant students. All faculty positions include teaching, scholarly activity and service responsibilities, and may or may not include clinical opportunities. Two 0.8 FTE positions available.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Other duties may be assigned in addition to the following
  • Provide instruction to physician assistant students within various settings such as lecture, laboratory, small-group discussions, clinical simulations or in a clinic, individual tutoring sessions, and web-based or technologically enhanced courses. Most courses within the program are team-taught, but knowledge in the following subjects is expected:
  • Clinical medicine
  • Physical diagnosis
  • Preventive medicine
  • Laboratory medicine
  • Clinical skills
  • Clinical patient assessment
  • PA professional issues
  • Health systems
  • Ethics
  • Research and epidemiology
  • Medical genetics
  • Nutrition
  • Master's project preparation and presentation
  • Provide instruction to other university students as appropriate and within their established workload.
  • Actively participate in academic and clinical scholarship, including but not limited to obtaining grant funding, bench research, article submissions, or monitoring student research.
  • Mapping didactic and clinical curricula by linking course specific instructional objectives and DMU university-wide learning outcomes to PA core competencies and assessment items via the university's learning management system.
  • Provide service to the program, college, university, and community as assigned by the Program Director. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
  • Assisting the department in the on-going review and evaluation of the curriculum and revising as needed based on national guidelines and the results of program curriculum mapping.
  • Assisting the department in accreditation activities.
  • Serving as an academic advisor to PA students.
  • Serving on the PA Admissions Committee and participating in recruiting events.
  • Serving on program, college and university committees as assigned.
  • Participating in one or both of the key program components of academic coordination and clinical coordination.
  • May have a 20% allocation in which to participate in on-going, non-DMU clinically related activities.
  • Participate in and successfully complete all University required training including, but not limited to, discrimination/harassment and code of conduct.
  • Perform other job related duties and special projects as assigned.


Qualifications/Education and/or Experience:

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
  • Physician Assistant candidates must be graduates from an accredited physician assistant program and certified by the NCCPA.
  • Physician Assistant candidates must possess or be willing to attain a Master's degree within an agreed upon time period.
  • Non-Physician Assistant candidates require a minimum of a Master's degree in a health-related field.
  • Physician applicants must be board certified or board eligible.
  • Candidates should have at least 5 years of clinical experience, if applicable.
  • Previous academic and/or public health experience is preferred.


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
  • If applicable, candidates must possess or be eligible for Iowa licensure in their respective field and maintain an active license while on faculty at Des Moines University.


ESSENTIAL SKILLS
  • Able to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals.
  • Able to respond to inquiries or complaints from students, regulatory agencies, or members of the professional community.
  • Able to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.
