Faculty Family Medicine Clinical-Academic

Summary/Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Des Moines University seeks a faculty member to join the Department of Family Medicine. Reporting to the Chair, this physician is responsible, along with the family medicine faculty, for provision of educational lectures, laboratories and other educational modalities along with maintaining a clinical practice within the University Clinic to support the educational priorities of the department and University.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Actively participate in the delivery of patient care to maintain clinical abilities within the University Clinic. Patient care includes the full spectrum of office based family medicine practice including but not limited to pediatric thru geriatric age groups, well woman care, refugee physicals, and Travel Clinic Patients as assigned.
  • Supervise clinical experience and practice of students and provide clinical education and instruction, including completion of evaluations of students' clinical skill and knowledge.
  • Participate in the call and coverage requirements of the clinics as assigned by the chair of the department.
  • Participate in the planning, implementation and assessment of learning for all educational opportunities provided by the department for all four years of education to include, but not limited to, classroom lectures, small group learning, simulation lab, SPAL, and clinical Family Medicine rotations for all University clinical programs.
  • Participate in the continuous process of curricular innovation and revision, seeking methods to better integrate clinical learning throughout all the years of the curriculum.
  • Scholarly activity/ research required that leads to outcomes that can be published and presented in scientific venues.
  • Actively participate on committees, student interviewing and advising, faculty development and community service.
  • Demonstrate commitment to the principles of diversity and inclusivity of the departmental faculty and staff.
  • Performs other job related duties and special projects as assigned by the Chair of Family Medicine.
  • Participate in and successfully complete all University required training including, but not limited to discrimination/harassment and code of conduct.


Supervisory Responsibilities:

SUPERVISION: Directly supervise physician assistant(s) within the Family Practice Clinics. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities may include interviewing and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; recommending rewards and disciplining of employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications/Education and/or Experience:

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • D.O. degree from a COCA accredited college of osteopathic medicine or M.D. degree from LCME accredited school of allopathic medicine. Board-eligible/certified by either the American Osteopathic Board of Family Medicine or the American Board of Family Medicine.
  • If board eligible, must obtain certification within one year of employment.
  • The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of three years teaching experience in either undergraduate or graduate medical education.


CERTIFICATIONS AND/OR LICENSURE

  • Must possess license to practice in State of Iowa, or be eligible to gain license to practice in the State of Iowa.
  • Must possess valid State and Federal narcotics license or be eligible to gain licensure.


ESSENTIAL SKILLS

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, interpersonal skills and/or presentation skills in particular possessing the following: (a) capable of responding to common inquiries or complaints from students or patients, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community (b) experience writing scientific articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format (c) capable of presenting information to management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
