Chairperson - Department of Family and Internal Medicine

Summary/Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine, the Chairperson of the Department of Family and Internal Medicine is responsible for executing functions related to the administrative, educational and clinical aspects of managing the Department of Family and Internal Medicine.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Provide day-to-day direction of the department to include conducting monthly departmental meetings, attendance at monthly COM faculty meetings and the development of strategic planning within the department consistent with the COM and University plans.
  • Responsible for the visioning, planning, implementation and assessment of learning for all educational opportunities provided by the department in all four years of education to include, but not limited to, classroom lectures, small group learning, simulation lab, Objective Structured Clinical Evaluations (OSCEs), and clinical Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Rural Medicine clerkships.
  • Oversee the continuous process of curricular innovation and revision, seeking methods to better integrate clinical learning throughout all the years of the curriculum.
  • Actively participate in the delivery of patient care in the Des Moines University Clinic.
  • Work with the Executive Director of the Des Moines University Clinic and the Deans as the part-time Medical Director to determine the clinical productivity goals of clinics and faculty members to meet the university, departmental, and student rotation goals.
  • Provide leadership and oversight to the Family Medicine Clinic manager and staff to insure efficient and effective clinic operations.
  • Foster the career development of the faculty by acting as role model and mentor. Seeks to provide leadership development and leadership opportunities for faculty.
  • Sets goals and expectations to include research and/or scholarship that lead to outcomes that can be published and presented in scientific venues.
  • Set goals for faculty participation in service to the COM and University including committee appointments, student interviewing and advising, faculty development and community service.
  • Provides leadership and supervision in the recruitment/hiring of new departmental faculty according to COM and University policy.
  • Oversight of the departmental budget as well as supervision of the staff within the department.
  • Responsible for communication between the department and the Office of the Dean which includes keeping the departmental faculty and staff informed of the COM and University's policy and procedures.
  • Actively participate on committees, student interviewing and advising, faculty development and community service.
  • Demonstrate commitment to the principles of diversity and inclusivity of the departmental faculty and staff.
  • Performs other job related duties and special projects as assigned by the Dean of COM and Executive Director of the Clinic.
  • Participate in and completes all University required training including, but not limited to discrimination/harassment and code of conduct.


Supervisory Responsibilities:

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This position has oversight for the Department of Family and Internal Medicine Academic and Clinical Services faculty and staff. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include but are not limited to interviewing and/or motivating and/or training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications/Education and/or Experience:

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
  • D.O. degree from a COCA accredited college of osteopathic medicine and certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Practice or the American Board of Family Medicine.
  • Member of the American Osteopathic Association.
  • Three years of experience teaching medical students and/or residents on clinical rotations and in classroom setting required.
  • Five years of clinical experience in Family Medicine required.
  • Leadership experience and training preferred.


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
  • Must possess valid State and Federal narcotics license or be eligible to gain licensure.
  • Must possess license to practice in the State of Iowa, or be eligible to gain license to practice in the State of Iowa.

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, interpersonal skills and/or presentation skills possessing the following: (a) capable of responding to common inquiries or complaints from students or patients, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community (b) experience participating in scholarly/peer-reviewed activities that conform to prescribed style and format (c) capable of presenting information to management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
