J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College (Reynolds) opened in 1972, the youngest in the VCCS. At Reynolds, their passion is to help students realize career and life aspirations. The College provides an outstanding college experience and support systems engineered for student success. Developed in partnership with the business community and traditional four-year schools, programs are grounded in the real world, calibrated to the needs of tomorrow's economy and attuned to the aspirations of students. Reynolds is named in honor of the late Lieutenant Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, J. Sargeant Reynolds, who championed legislation creating the state-supported community college system. Reynolds is a three-campus institution (Parham Road, Downtown, and Goochland), and the third-largest among the 23 colleges in the VCCS. Reynolds proudly serves the City of Richmond and the counties of Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, Powhatan, and Louisa.

Reynolds offers a variety of academic programs and services and boasts an annualized enrollment of 15,000 credit students. The College also provides training for 5,500 students through the Community College Workforce Alliance, a workforce division partnership with John Tyler Community College. During its 46-year history, the College has educated nearly 350,000 people in the Richmond area. One in four local working adults has attended Reynolds and one in three healthcare workers has attended Reynolds.

 

The Opportunity:

With the retirement of Dr. Gary Rhodes after sixteen years of outstanding service, Reynolds is seeking its next president. As part of Reynolds' mission to provide an accessible, quality education that develops students for success, the Local College Board and college community have identified several priorities and key characteristics for their next leader:

Strategic Leadership: Provide visionary, strategic leadership with an understanding and appreciation of shared governance practices.

Student Retention & Success: Seek ways to increase enrollment through effective recruitment and retention practices, including the implementation of new programs based on the needs of the community.

Strategic Financial Management: Work to identify opportunities outside of the traditional sources of tuition, fees, and state and local support to meet current and future needs.

Community Partnerships: Build on the college's legacy of success by supporting and expanding the diverse and emerging communities served by Reynolds.

Success Factors:

The next president will be a skilled strategist able to envision, propose, and implement change with a proven record of engaging the college, community, and other external partners in improving student access and success. The president will develop and maintain strong leadership teams, seek continuous improvement, and foster positive change, new ideas and involvement. This leader will build successful partnerships with highly diverse stakeholders and advance fundraising efforts. Internally, she/he will ensure operational efficiency, fiscal strength, and college affordability, while building sustainability of programs to meet the needs of the students and community at large. An understanding of the mission and goals of a comprehensive community college in the 21st Century and appreciation for multi campus colleges are essential characteristics, along with a clear commitment to instruction, student success, generating revenues, and community involvement.

 

Qualifications for President:

To accomplish the above, qualified candidates must have an earned doctorate and demonstrated successful senior executive experience at the highest levels. Previous experience must include significant responsibility for programs, budgets, personnel, facilities, and other appropriate administrative duties. The ideal candidate will have proven leadership abilities along with excellent communications skills, a strong belief in a collaborative administrative style, as well as, a servant leadership perspective. She/he must also have a broad vision for the College along with the skills and energy for implementation. Demonstrated ability to work with business, industry, government, and the community at large is required.

The salary range for this position is $171,619- $250,640.
