Laboratory Animal Technician

Position Summary:
The Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation at Virginia Tech oversees the university-wide strategic initiatives and operational functions of Virginia Tech's $520+ million research enterprise and associated technology commercialization activities, which span eight academic colleges, eight university research institutes, and three affiliated research corporations. The university is embarking on its next phase of strategic growth in research across its Blacksburg, Roanoke, and Northern Virginia locations, including the integration of a medical school in 2018.
The Office of the University Veterinarian and Animal Resources supports this aim by ensuring the well-being of animals used in research, teaching and production.
Opportunities are currently available to join our dedicated Animal Resources team to provide daily care and husbandry of various species of laboratory animals maintained in dedicated facilities. In addition to having a positive attitude and compassion for both animals and people, primary duties include providing care for laboratory animals and cleaning of and maintaining facilities; receiving animals, maintaining required records, observing and reporting on the health of the animals in his/her care; providing assistance in preventative maintenance and repair of Vivarium equipment as needed/instructed; and collaborating and communicating effectively with team members and researchers
This position will be supporting the services of our Roanoke location; however, support in the Blacksburg facilities may be required based on business needs.
This position will require shift hours to work some weekends and holidays.

Required Qualifications:
- Previous experience handling and restraining a wide variety of animals.
- Good communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to recognize abnormal behavior and clinical signs in laboratory animals.
- Demonstrated ability to follow instructions.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Preference given for AALAS certification at ALAT level or higher or eligible.
- Preference given for previous aquaculture experience, preferably zebrafish
