The Chemistry Laboratory Manager supports the operations of the Chemistry and Physics Department by providing management of the scientific materials and undergraduate laboratory, which includes operational responsibility for the chemical stockroom, equipment, and instrumentation used in the teaching laboratories, the hiring and training of student teaching assistants and set-up students, and overall chemical safety in the Department.

Essential Functions:
1. Manage entire chemical and supplies inventory and maintain accurate record of all the chemicals used in the teaching and research laboratories on the 4th floor of the Park Science Building by;
  • Sourcing and purchasing equipment, materials, and chemicals as needed;
  • Maintaining an up-to-date inventory of all materials safety data sheets (MSDS) for all chemicals in collection (both electronic and print);
  • Generating reports as needed for safety inspection and internal and external reporting of holdings;
  • Maintaining an appropriate inventory of chemical and equipment (clean glassware, gloves, etc.) to support teaching laboratory experiments within budgeted guidelines;
  • Maintaining accurate records of chemicals and supplies used in teaching and research laboratories.

2. Ensure the safe handling of chemicals in the Department by;
  • Maintaining the college Chemical Hygiene Plan for the department;
  • Training all new TA's, adjunct and full time faculty in safety training;
  • Developing a test that every individual working in lab must pass in order to work in lab;
  • Keeping a record of all chemical incidents;
  • Keeping a weekly check on all the satellite waste stations;
  • Writing reports and conducting safety audits to ensure everyone on the floor is adhering to the safety protocols;
  • Coordinating chemical waste management, and finding the most cost effective and safest way to remove chemical waste from the floor.

3. Manage the set-up for undergraduate teaching laboratories by;
  • Supervising students preparing set-up chemicals and supplies to oversee that all the preparation for labs are ready and done correctly. This includes the running of preliminary tests on selected reagents and equipment to assure proper chemical response and properly functioning of equipment in advance of the scheduled labs;
  • Working with faculty to determine the equipment, supplies, and chemicals required for each laboratory program before each semester, including the detailed procedures and lists of solutions, apparatus, and materials for all first-year and second-year laboratories;
  • Hiring and supervising students to maintain cleanliness of all labs, and set-up of all laboratory equipment drawers before the start of each semester.

4. Maintaining the Department Scientific Instrumentation by;
  • Performing routine maintenance on scientific equipment;
  • Maintaining good relationships with equipment companies;
  • Communicating with technicians to ensure equipment is properly maintained and repaired.

5. Manage the hiring, training, and supervising of all students involved in laboratory and course support functions including teaching assistants (TAs), set-up students, study group leaders, and tutors by;
  • Coordinating with faculty members to ensure study group leaders and tutors are hired through the Center for Academic Achievement;
  • Coordinating and managing the hiring of students for the required positions;
  • Training all TA's and set-up students;
  • Overseeing and supervising their work;
  • Giving formative and summative assessment of student TA and Set-up performance - including but not limited to the information reported in the course evaluations at the end of the semester;
  • Conducting safety training for all new TA's and new part-time instructors.

Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in a scientific field required. This position requires a minimum of 3 years of extensive experience of safe laboratory practices and working knowledge of state and federal safety regulations pertaining to chemical and equipment usage and disposal. Experience managing Undergraduate chemical laboratory stockroom required.
