Makerspace Technician

The 1819 Innovation Hub at the University of Cincinnati is seeking a Makerspace Technician to support the operation and administration of the 1819 Makerspace including providing assistance to users with design projects, maintaining and operating equipment, and managing space and equipment access. In addition to machine programming and operation, a major focus of the position will be insuring safety within the makerspace and the development and administration of teaching and training resources.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides consultative technical and training support and services to 1819 Makerspace users to ensure problem resolution, system/data access, and optimal system performance.
  • Participates in the recruitment and training of student employees in the 1819 Makerspace facility.
  • Assists users with alterations in design to increase efficiency or aid in fabrication.
  • Proactively coaches the layout work necessary to fabricate objects from various materials.
  • Develops and provides training to users that maximize their ability to utilize system capabilities, features, and other resources.
  • Enforces policies and procedures regarding safety, training and access to the space.
  • Advises on the installation, configuration, and modification of equipment and associated software.
  • Collaborates with UC faculty and administration to support curriculum and programing for the 1819 Makerspace.
  • Other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree required and a minimum of three (3) years of experience -OR- Associate's degree with five (5) years of related experience -OR- a combination of relevant education and seven (7) years of experience. Degree should be in Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, or related field.

At least two (2) years of experience in operating and programing CNC machines, laser machining, 3-D printing and use of design software is required. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications; Good written and oral communication skills. Thorough knowledge of additive and subtractive processes, machine operation, fabrication techniques, and working with various materials including wood, metal, and plastics in a prototyping or manufacturing environment is a plus.

This position will be a professional position paid at an hourly rate.
