Graduate Assistant - Athletics Sports Performance

St. John's University invites applications for a Graduate Assistant position in Athletics Sports Performance Department. This position is for the 2018 Academic Year and begins at the start of the Fall 2018 semester.

  • The qualified candidate will report to the Director of Strength & Conditioning and will assist with the implementation and supervision of all aspects of the sports performance program for Olympic sports excluding Basketball.
  • The applicants should possess prior experience in a collegiate sports performance setting. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is required as well as a certification from an accredited strength and conditioning organization. SCCC or CSCS preferred.
  • The applicant must also possess CPR/AED and first aid certification.
  • The position may require weekend hours, and availability during breaks and select holidays. In addition, the position will require availability in the summer, particular in August during preseason.
  • The position offers a monthly stipend and full tuition waiver upon acceptance into a graduate program at St. John's University.

Summary Description of Services Provided by the Department:
The department will provide the graduate assistant and opportunity to participate with the Director of Strength and Conditioning to experience and help implement all aspects of the strength and condition program for 15 sports. The graduate assistant will participate in various meetings, observe strength and conditioning session and assist in the implementation of the training program. The graduate assistance will get hands on experience and receive guidance from an experienced certified director.

Description of what the experiential learning experience will be during his/her rotation:
The graduate assistant will gain valuable experience working under the supervision of the Director of Strength and Conditioning. The assistant will be exposed to numerous coaching methodologies which will supplement course work. The graduate assistant will engage in projects and see the application of sports science in the real world environment. The graduate assistant will experience overall strength and conditioning management, various coaching methodologies, sport science technique and analysis.

Describe the major activities the GA will be involved with and evaluated on:
  • Participate and contribute in meeting with the Director of Strength and Conditioning and staff where programming administrative incentives are planned
  • Attend compliance and rules education meetings and assist in the tracking of compliance documentation, learn and analyze regulations and policy in relation to sport
  • Under the supervision of the Director of Strength and Conditioning coordinate and assist in implementing conditioning programs
  • Participate in coaches meetings and assist in analyzing testing compilation, results and tactical strategies to improve coaching and programming
  • Experience Sports Science. Participate in planning meetings with the strength and conditioning staff. Experience principles of physiology, sports psychology and sociology related to coaching effectiveness through the observation of practice sessions, SC workouts techniques, and attendance at coaches meetings.
  • Assess technology's impact on the program. Analyze the coaching staffs use of technology and provide feedback
  • Observe practice sessions, team meetings, strength, conditioning workouts
  • Participate in planning, facility supervision and maintenance.
  • Under the supervision of the Director assist in supervising the student worker staff.


Qualifications:
Education and sports management degrees a plus. Strength and conditioning certification

Computer skills excel, power point, video exchange preferred, organized, detailed oriented, ability to communicate effectively work effectively with interdependencies, knowledge experience and level of proficiency in the sport strongly recommended.
