As a member of the Controller's Office team, the Senior Accountant reports to the Controller and is responsible for maintaining and monitoring general ledger activities as well as reconciling general ledger accounts primarily in the areas of investments, restricted gift funds, agency funds and grants. Through supervising a staff accountant, the position is also responsible for the ongoing monitoring, accounting and reporting of the college's sponsored programs. For the annual audit, this position will assist the Controller in preparing financial statements and footnotes and monitoring the status of auditor schedule and backup requests. In addition, this role will provide financial support and analysis to various college departments.

Essential Functions:
  • Record investment activity for the college's investments and funds held in trust. Obtain, review and record activity from manager statements on an ongoing basis;
  • Supervise one staff accountant with a focus on grant accounting and other miscellaneous areas of accounting focus;
  • Prepare and record asset, liability, revenue, and expense entries by compiling and analyzing supporting documentation and accounting information;
  • Balance assigned general ledger accounts; verifies, allocates, posts, reconciles transactions; researches and resolves discrepancies;
  • Responsible for preparing reconciling entries and year-end closing entries;
  • Responsible for gift revenue reconciliation and pledge receivable accounting;
  • Responsible for coordinating with Advancement Office to provide financial reports for donors, prospective donors, and the Board of Trustees;
  • Monitor and account for the college's releases from restriction, ensuring that donor funds are being spent in accordance with donor intentions;
  • Assists Controller with preparation and coordination for annual external audit, compiles and provides data for auditors;
  • Support Controller in the preparation of the College's tax returns, including Form 990 and MA Form PC;
  • Assist Controller with ad-hoc reporting and analysis as required;
  • Work with Student Activities and other departments in the administration of agency funds;
  • Responsible for Fenway Card; recording activity and reconciling bank account.

    Essential Qualifications and Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required.
  • A minimum of three years of progressively responsible experience in accounting, preferably in a higher education or non-profit environment.
  • Prior experience using automated systems, spreadsheet applications, and word processing software required.
  • Strong analytical, organizational and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision and work effectively under tight time constraints, and resolve problems with minimal supervision.
  • Prior experience in Public Accounting and CPA license, while not required, strongly preferred.
  • Supervisory and Workday experience preferred.
