Infrastructure Technician

Salary: $18.08/hourly

Job Summary:

The Infrastructure Technician is responsible for maintaining the university's voice, video, and data cabling systems and related outside plant system and supporting infrastructure including conduits, manholes, MDF/IDFs, data centers, and various cabling mediums (e.g., copper, fiber, coax).

Duties and Essential Job Functions:

Installs Category 3 through Category 6A structured cable distribution systems, including outlets, pulling cabling, fire stopping and pre-termination including organizing, forming, dressing and labeling cables to industry standards.

Determines communications room and equipment layouts and installs related hardware including backboards, connecting blocks, racks, patch panels and fiber enclosures, and balance video equipment.

Maintains and references industry best practices and standards including BICSI, ANSI, EIA/TIA, and local codes.

Tests cables to required certification parameters utilizing appropriate test equipment as required.

Ensures optimal condition of outside plant and communication rooms by visually inspecting, organizing, documenting and remediating deficiencies.

Provides supervision and consultation with third-party cabling contractors for large or complex cabling projects.

Maintains documentation and accuracy of information in the outside plant management system.

Manages projects to ensure on-time, quality delivery, and successful completion.

Improves technical knowledge by attending educational workshops and technical training; reviewing professional publications.

Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.

Performs other related duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
Required Education and Experience:
  • High School or GED.
  • 2 plus years' experience with voice, video, and data line installation and problem resolution.


Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Experience with Audio/Video cabling and related equipment.
  • Experience with CATV Head End systems.
  • Prior experience in Higher Education and/or Information Technology.


Required Licensure/Certification/Specialized Training:
  • Valid Texas Driver's License.
  • Must be insurable under the university motor vehicle requirements.


Preferred Licensure/Certification/Specialized Training:
  • One or more cable infrastructure certifications (e.g., BICSI) or other relevant technology certifications.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of entrance facilities, communications rooms, structured cabling and subsystems, backbone cabling, horizontal cabling, fiber, copper, and coax driven systems, punch down blocks 66/110, Cat5/6 RJ45 cabling, crimping tools, coaxial RG/6 and RG11 compression tools.
  • Knowledge of interfaces, racking equipment, patch panel, cable management and related accessories, BICSI standards, structured cabling standards, color code knowledge for patch cables.
  • Knowledge of problem solving, planning and organizing techniques.
  • Ability to successfully complete OSHA 10 safety training.
  • Ability to improve technical knowledge through certifications, training and experience.
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team to fulfill project goals.
  • Ability to successfully complete tasks with minimal direction, on-time and which carry significant risk and manage multiple projects and operational activities simultaneously.


Physical Requirements (With or Without Accommodations):
  • Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information.
  • Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication.
  • Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions.
  • Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling and prolonged sitting.
  • Lifting and moving objects and equipment up to 25 lbs.


Work Environment:
  • Work is both indoors and outdoors and with moderate physical activity and will require some work to be performed outside of the traditional work schedule.
  • There are no harmful environmental conditions present for this job.
  • The noise level in this work environment is usually moderate.
