ESL Faculty Positions

The University of Delaware English Language Institute (ELI), an academic unit in the College of Arts and Sciences, invites applications from outstanding ESL professionals to fill two full-time, continuing academic faculty positions, effective September 1, 2018. Positions may be offered at the instructor or, given suitable qualifications, assistant professor rank. Each position is a ten-month appointment, with an initial two-year contract.

The ELI is well respected among intensive English programs, in large part because it attracts talented and creative faculty members who are committed to supporting students in meeting their linguistic and cross-cultural goals and to pursuing excellence in their teaching, scholarship, and service. We retain such faculty by offering excellent opportunities for professional growth and advancement, highly competitive salaries, a generous benefits package, access to extensive University resources, and a supportive and collaborative work environment. The ELI offers a wide variety of courses and programs, including: English for Academic Purposes, Business English, English for Professionals, English Through American Culture, Legal English, EFL Teacher Training, ITA training, and instruction for English Language Learners in the public schools. The ELI also participates in teaching the MA TESL program. More information about the ELI is available at www.udel.edu/eli.

Full-time faculty members typically teach two courses per 7 or 8-week session and serve on institute, college, and university committees. Faculty are also encouraged to conduct research, publish, and present at national and international academic and professional conferences, for which support may be provided. Opportunities for program coordination are also available.

Qualifications. Applicants must meet the educational requirements set by the Consortium of University and College Intensive English Programs (UCIEP) for core IEP faculty, i.e., have a master's degree in either:
  • Teaching English as a Second Language or
  • Applied Linguistics with coursework in the following areas: culture and society, second language acquisition, second-language/TESL pedagogy, second-language assessment, and language teaching practicum.

Candidates must also have the following:
  • a minimum of three years of relevant post-master's ESL classroom experience in addressing all L2 skill areas
  • evidence of substantial professional activity and accomplishments
  • strong written and oral communication skills
  • excellence in teaching advanced English for Academic Purposes, with demonstrated expertise in teaching L2 composition and, especially, L2 reading

In brief, the Institute is seeking two exceptional ESL professionals who can contribute to further strengthening the program's reputation as a leader in teaching, service, and scholarship.

Specialization. To meet current and future ELI instructional and programmatic needs, candidates must demonstrate substantial expertise in English for Academic Purposes, in terms of teaching L2 composition and, especially, in L2 academic reading development.

Submission and Review Process. The search is being conducted by a committee comprised of three faculty members. Each applicant must submit a cover letter highlighting areas of his or her experience which demonstrate areas of expertise; a list of at least three professional and/or academic references; and a curriculum vitae. Applications are due by March 10, 2018.

Qualified Candidates. Those candidates who qualify will be contacted by April 7, 2018 to submit a brief packet of information consisting of the following items:
  1. a summary of recent course evaluations
  2. at least one written observation of your teaching by a colleague or supervisor, if available
  3. two sample lesson plans for English for Academic Purposes courses
