Director, William A. Anderson Fund (Associate or Full Professor)

UNIVERSITY OF DELAWARE

Director, William A. Anderson Fund, Flagship Institution

(Associate or Full Professor)

The University of Delaware (www.udel.edu) seeks a senior disaster scientist or engineer to join the faculty and serve as the founding director of the newly established William (Bill) A. Anderson Fund (BAF) Flagship Institution (www.billandersonfund.org). The Director will serve as a high profile faculty leader for the BAF, engaging and interfacing with academic, government, private sector, and non-profit partners to support recruitment, mentoring, and professional development activities to increase the number of historically underrepresented students pursuing disaster science and practice. At the University of Delaware, the Director will develop strategic partnerships, hire and supervise staff, and engage in marketing and general program management. The Director will also serve as a leader for national efforts that support the BAF mission, including recruiting students, developing and evaluating programming, developing networks for participating students, and fundraising for scholarships and other program needs. This exciting program, and the Director's position, will be located in UD's Disaster Research Center (DRC) (www.drc.udel.edu).

We seek candidates with program leadership and development ability; enthusiasm for and experience in mentoring students; a strong familiarity with graduate programs in the field of disaster sciences, and a well-developed commitment to diversity and inclusion. Ideal candidates will have a strong record of scholarship, teaching, and professional service; or a stellar record of applied experience commensurate with appointment at a senior faculty rank.

As a faculty member, the BAF Director must hold an appointment in one or more academic units, and is expected to contribute to the academic life of that unit. The successful candidate will also serve as a core faculty member in the DRC and be expected to contribute to the interdisciplinary Disaster Science and Management (DISA) program. The selected candidate may be considered for either a tenured or continuing track (CT) position. Tenured faculty must have an active research program in a disaster-related field, an excellent record of publications, and successful teaching experience. The CT provides a pathway for experienced professionals and scholars with a specialized industry focus who are interested in teaching and practice. CT faculty members have full-time appointments, and are eligible for promotion in academic rank and sabbaticals; however, they are not eligible for tenure. At minimum, candidates for either track must have a professional doctorate (e.g., Eng.D., D.E.M., J.D.) or a Ph.D.

Applicants should submit: (1) a current curriculum vita/resume; (2) a cover letter outlining in detail their interest and qualifications; (3) contact information for three references (references will not be contacted prior to notifying the candidate) Please direct questions, but not application materials, to Tricia Wachtendorf, Ph.D., Search Committee Chair (twachten@udel.edu). Review of applications will begin on November 26th, 2017 and will
continue until the position is filled.

Located in scenic Newark, Delaware, within 2 hours of New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C., UD is a Land Grant, Sea Grant, Space Grant, and Carnegie Research University (with very high research activity, a designation accorded to fewer than 3% of degree-granting institutions in the U.S.), and with external funding exceeding $200 million. A state-assisted, privately governed institution, the University enrolls approximately 17,000 undergraduates and 4,000 graduate students.

UD has a number of environment- and disaster-oriented programs and research streams in its various colleges. The DRC is the world's oldest center focused on the social science and management aspects of disaster. The Flagship will complement DRC's research, education, and engagement missions, while at the same time expanding these initiatives directed at students across the institution and in each of UD's colleges.

Our University recognizes and values the importance of diversity and inclusion in enriching the employment experience of its employees and in supporting the academic mission. UD is committed to attracting and retaining employees with different identities and backgrounds. UD provides equal access to and opportunity in its programs, facilities, and employment without regard to race, color, creed, religion, national origin, gender, age, marital status, disability, public assistance status, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. UD is the recipient of a National Science Foundation ADVANCE Institutional Transformation Grant, focused on enhancing the climate of the university for women and underrepresented minority faculty.
