Chair, Department of Biological Sciences

The Department of Biological Sciences (http://www.bio.udel.edu/) at the University of Delaware invites applications for Department Chair. Successful candidates should have a scholarly specialization in the life sciences and a distinguished record of scholarship commensurate with appointment as a tenured Professor in the department. We seek an individual with an exceptional national and international reputation in their discipline, a strong history of extramural funding, and a desire to lead the department to new heights of reputation and national prominence. The position of Department Chair is appointed for a five-year renewable term. The expected start date of the position is September 1, 2018.

The Department of Biological Sciences has a distinguished history in scholarship and teaching, an award-winning faculty, significant extramural funding, and offers PhD programs in Molecular Biology & Genetics and Cell & Organ Systems. The Department has a vibrant collaborative research and teaching community that consists of 34 faculty members with broad research interests including molecular biology, genetics, developmental biology and cell signaling. The Department houses over 900 undergraduate students and 80 graduate students in its PSM,MS, PhD and MBA/PhD programs.

The University of Delaware offers a highly interactive multidisciplinary scientific environment and is committed to advancing the life sciences across the institution and specifically, the Department of Biological Sciences. The department has outstanding facilities and support, with state-of-the-art core facilities including a world-class bioimaging center, DNA sequencing & genotyping, bioinformatics, biochemical and chemical analysis, protein production, and proteomics. Other facilities include: human 3T fMRI, multiple small animal imaging systems directly connected to the vivarium, and an advanced microscopy center. Collaborative and interdisciplinary opportunities abound through the Delaware Rehabilitation Institute, the Delaware Biotechnology Institute, and many other centers. The Delaware Technology Park is nearby, where entrepreneurial and research incubators are co-located with academic research labs. The Delaware Health Sciences Alliance, a partnership between UD, Christiana Care Health System, Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, and Thomas Jefferson University, provides infrastructure and opportunity for innovative clinical and translational collaborations. The campus in Newark, Delaware provides the amenities of a vibrant college town with convenient access to the major cities of the Mid-Atlantic and East Coast.
