QUALIFICATIONS:

The Department of Music at the University of Delaware seeks a dynamic teacher and scholar in Music Theory. The successful candidate will be joining a department in which performers, educators, scholars, and creators of music collaborate to achieve the highest levels of artistry while engaging local, regional, and global communities. We welcome any research specialization and would especially encourage applications from scholars who are also committed to progressive pedagogy. Candidates must have a completed doctorate in Music Theory at the time of appointment, and their record must show successful experience in collegiate-level teaching, as well as an established record of research that demonstrates the promise of continued growth and significance in the field.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will teach a 3+2 load, focusing on courses for our music majors and graduate students, and may also provide mentoring and thesis advisement for undergraduate Music Theory majors. Primary teaching responsibilities will include courses in the following areas: core undergraduate theory courses (Written Theory and Aural Skills); graduate topics courses; upper-level courses (Counterpoint, Keyboard Harmony, and Analysis and Interpretation). The candidate will also be expected to produce significant research through presentations and publications. In addition to teaching and research, all music faculty are expected to contribute to the department's mission and also participate in departmental, college, and university activities and governance.

RANK: Assistant Professor, Tenure Track

SALARY: Commensurate with rank and experience (and guided by our collective bargaining agreement).

The University of Delaware is a private, state-assisted research university, enrolling approximately 22,000 students. The city of Newark, with a population of approximately 30,000 is located in northeastern Delaware, fourteen miles southwest of Wilmington, the principal city of the state. The campus lies midway between New York City and Washington, D.C., affording students and faculty easy access to cultural events in Philadelphia, New York, Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

THE DEPARTMENT:

The Department of Music is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music. We offer the Bachelor of Music degrees in Applied Music, Music Education, Music History and Literature, Music Theory, and Composition; the Bachelor of Arts with a major in Music and Music Management; and Master of Music degrees in Performance, Composition, Conducting, and Teaching. The Department comprises 52 full and part-time faculty and enrolls approximately 300 undergraduate majors, minors, and graduate students. The department of music has a growing national reputation, thanks in large part to the international success of its choral and instrumental ensembles; undergraduate and graduate student research leading to national and international conference presentations; and faculty/student co-publications.
