POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The primary responsibility of this Printmaking Position at the University of Delaware (UD) Department of Art & Design involves the implementation of a printmaking curriculum from undergraduate through graduate instruction. Must possess robust knowledge of technique, theory, and history of printmaking, as well as full knowledge of current health and safety practices. The successful candidate will support the diverse and creative environment of the department and will join a group of 15 professional faculty representing the highest levels of professional performance and academic quality, including representation in international exhibitions and collections of major museums in the United States and beyond. The ideal candidate will demonstrate through their portfolio and CV that they are conversant in both traditional and contemporary practices in art and printmaking. Competence in professional print production, emerging technical and digital applications and an interest in collaborating with other disciplines. Continued intensive creative/research agenda in one's discipline, projected towards a national level; Service to the department, college, and university community is also expected. Special consideration will be given to candidates who possess proficiency in Letterpress printing, the ability to teach typography, and are competent in digital technologies. THE UNIVERSITY and SURROUNDING AREA:

The University of Delaware is a private, state-assisted research university, enrolling approximately 22,000 students. From its roots as a private academy in 1743, today UD is a research-intensive, technologically advanced university with global impact. The University's location on the Northeast corridor of the United States makes it an ideal place to study art and design. Situated midway between Philadelphia and Baltimore, the campus is about two hours by train/car north to New York City, or south to Washington, D.C. Proximity to so many art and design centers offers access to opportunities and inspiration for students and faculty. The city of Newark, with a population of approximately 30,000 is located in northeastern Delaware, fourteen miles southwest of Wilmington, the principal city of the state.

THE DEPARTMENT:

The Department of Art & Design is part of a distinguished research and teaching university that strives to build a faculty of innovative thinkers whose work engages contemporary dialogue as befits a research-intensive institution. It is a dynamic department that is adapting to changes in culture and technology.

The department has three undergraduate degree programs: BA, BFA-Fine Arts, and BFA-Visual Communications. Graduate programs include an established MFA in Fine Arts and a new MA in Interaction Design. Many undergraduate students in the department, especially those in the BA program, complete minors and/or secondary majors or degrees in programs all across the university. The department is part of the Arts Portfolio within the College of Arts and Sciences, which also includes Theater and Music. Art and Design Faculty have developed collaborations with non-art departments to share classes and facilities such as state of the art maker-spaces. Department faculty work in collaboration with faculty across the university in a range of disciplines-from engineering and gaming to dance and entrepreneurship.

FACILITIES:

The printmaking studios at UD include spaces for traditional and digital processes for our students that reflect the area's emphasis on integration. The three adjacent workspaces include presses for etching, relief, and lithography, large-scale digital printers, and a fully equipped screen-printing facility. The Studio Arts Building maker space currently maintains a Forrest Scientific 4' x 8' CNC Router, a Vy-Tek FX3 laser cutter with a CO2 laser and a 2' x 3' material bed, a Roland CAMM-1 Pro GX-400 46" vinyl cutter and several 3D printers, including three Lulzbot TAZ 5s and a Wasp Delta 4070 with a 40 cm x 70 cm cylindrical build volume. Raven Press is an experimental letterpress printing facility where students are encouraged to experiment with typographic form and physical composition of the printed page. Raven Press currently maintains a 20" X 30" R. Hoe Washington style hand press, a Vandercook 219, Universal 1, and Number 3, over 800 cases of metal type, and 2500 individual pieces of wood type.

COURSES:

The department currently offers classes in printmaking, screen-printing, printmaking strategies, expanded print media, digital printmaking, letterpress printing, printmaking studio, book arts and typography.

QUALIFICATIONS:
MFA in Art with demonstrated excellence in printmaking. Two to three years of professional or university teaching experience beyond graduate school. Applicant must have an active professional exhibition record demonstrating regional and national recognition.

Note: Video clips should be submitted via a link to YouTube or Vimeo and no more than two minutes each with five minutes total for professional artwork and five minutes total for student artwork.
