Duties and Responsibilities

The Office of Student Engagement and Multicultural Affairs employs 21 enthusiastic and resourceful students to facilitate the summer orientation program at Ithaca College. Our goal is to select a well-rounded, diverse staff that is able to work with first-year students and their family members during their orientation experience.

In addition to the application materials, we consider each candidate's academic year, area(s) of study, curricular and co-curricular involvement, leadership experience, unique qualities showcased during the application process, capacity to learn during the leadership training program, and motivation for applying.

Required Qualifications

As a resourceful leadership team of 21, you will participate in a comprehensive leadership-training program focused on:

confidently facilitate group discussions and speak in public
empathetically work with diverse populations
creatively problem solve
intentionally support students in their academic planning
effectively collaborate on a high-functioning team
something about crisis management
something about self-awareness

Requirements:

Acceptable academic standing with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75, maintained throughout the spring semester.
Good judicial standing throughout the spring semester.
Full-time enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student for the spring 2018 and fall 2018 semesters.
No additional employment commitments or enrollment in summer school courses are permitted during summer training and orientation sessions.
Capacity to work effectively with a diverse group of team members, first-year students, and family members.
Demonstrated record of flexibility, responsibility, sound judgment in decision-making, and a willingness to assist others.
Orientation Leaders must be present at all summer orientation sessions as well as the entire Orientation Staff training.
Attendance at a spring meeting is required. Class excuses, once in a lifetime, and study abroad conflicts are approved absences with prior approval.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Leadership Training: Attend and actively participate in all training sessions that are focused on developing the team, learning job responsibilities and resources, and developing an inclusive, confident leadership style. Training includes weekdays, evenings, and weekend programming.
Facilitation and Public Speaking: Assist in preparation of orientation activities and program responsibilities, including:
small group discussions,
ICC program and course registration facilitation,
the Are You Ready For This skit,
the check-in process,
individual introductions,
group dance for the welcome,
and other presentations as necessary.
Customer Service: Be approachable, attentive and helpful with IC's diverse population of students and family members attending orientation. Additionally, create and maintain a positive relationship with faculty and staff partners.
Mentorship: Be a responsible and positive peer mentor, understanding this relationship continues into the semester and has a significant impact on a student's experience.
Networking: Effectively communicate with various staff, faculty, and administrators during each session and maintain a professional partnership.
Goal Setting and Professional Development: Create personal and professional goals for the summer, and receive feedback and encouragement from professional orientation staff members.
Teamwork: Actively work with the orientation staff to develop and maintain a high functioning team focused on accomplishing the established orientation goals.
Inspire An Inclusive Community: Facilitate group discussions by articulating IC's academic expectations, addressing first-year transition issues, and discussing what it means to be part of a diverse community.
Peer Advising: Educate new and transfer students about the ICC requirements and assist them in the preparation of schedule options for class registration.
Facilitate Transition: Create a welcoming environment for students and their family members by teaching them about campus resource providers, building locations, and off-campus resources. This includes maintaining informal support of students throughout their first semester.
Conflict Resolution: Confront and document students by serving in an on-call duty rotation. This includes having educational conversations with students about community standards.
Manage Administrative Processes: Staff the orientation office during each orientation session. - Including the management of multiple administrative processes (such as a lock-out log and key inventory).

Employment Details:

Compensation: Room, Board, and Biweekly Pay

Room: A single residence hall room for dates of employment.
Board: Meals during training and throughout dates of employment.
Pay: OLs will be paid a minimum of $2,000 over the course of 6 weeks of employment.
