Position Summary:
The Research Assistant Professor for SEAD (Science, Engineering, Arts, Design) Education Assessment and Evaluation is responsible for design and development of research studies, assessment tools, and evaluation procedures to analyze and report on outcomes related to the collective mission of the Center for Research in SEAD Education ( CRSE ) and the Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology at Virginia Tech ( ICAT ).
The Center for Research in SEAD Education is involved in the creation, planning, implementation and evaluation of a wide variety of activities that seek to connect communities within the university, throughout Central Appalachia, and across the Commonwealth and the beyond. It is one of two research centers within ICAT , a unique working and learning environment where students, faculty, and community are encouraged to explore research topics that sit at the nexus of science, engineering, the arts, and design and engage in collaborations representing a diversity of disciplines.
Reporting to the Director of CRSE , this position supports a growing body of work in PK12 community outreach, teacher professional development, and creative interdisciplinary research. Through collaboration with other faculty, we seek to merge research with outreach and coordinate research efforts both within and outside the institute and university. The SEAD Education Assessment and Evaluation researcher is responsible for writing and collaborating on grant proposals, designing and implementing assessment and evaluation plans, managing a database that tracks outreach activities, representing the Center and the Institute in campus and state liaison efforts, and producing creative products and publications at the national level.
Key responsibilities:
1. Coordinate assessment and evaluation plans that contribute to continuous improvement efforts and broader impacts
2. Design, develop and maintain a database of University outreach activities related to SEAD education
3. Conduct scholarly and liaison activities
4. Support the development of new sponsored research projects by serving as PI or member of proposal teams

Required Qualifications:
- PhD or terminal degree in an Education program or related discipline with an emphasis on assessment, evaluation, PK12 outreach and/or interdisciplinarity.
- Strong body of relevant written materials and conference participation.
- Experience designing research and assessment plans using a variety of methods.
- Experience writing or participating in sponsored research projects, and knowledge of external funding agency procedures and regulations.
- Planning and organizational skills.
- Experience in collaborative work environments requiring teamwork, well-developed communication skills, and a demonstrated ability to work well with others.
- Record of successfully setting and meeting deadlines.
- Ability and desire to engage with PK12 teachers, students, and parents in a positive and engaging manner.

Preferred Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have some knowledge in all, and a proven track record in one or two, of the following areas:
- Knowledge of PK12 policies, procedures, standards of learning, and teacher evaluation.
- Experience interacting with a broad spectrum of cross-functional teams comprised of faculty, students, industry personnel, and others.
- Experience with participatory design research and program evaluation.
- Working knowledge of longitudinal database systems and structures.
- Knowledge of research and practice regarding critical thinking and creativity in multiple teaching and learning environments.
- Understanding of and engagement in design practices, theory, and thinking.
- Experience with community, not-for-profit, and university organizations aimed at learning, discovery, and engagement.
- Experience with community relations and marketing.
- Ability to manage budgets and some knowledge of fiscal management procedures.
- Initiative to learn trans-disciplinary content and ability to communicate through and across multiple disciplines.
