The Office of Residential Life & Learning (ORLL) supports dynamic co-curricular learning and engagement for all undergraduate and graduate students living on campus within the Schools of Arts & Sciences, Engineering, and Museum of Fine Arts across 50 undergraduate residence halls/houses (approximately 3650 beds) and 4 graduate residence houses (approximately 35 beds) at Tufts. The department partners closely with colleagues across the Division of Student Affairs and with other University-wide departments (including Community Relations, Public Safety, Residential Facilities and Operations, Office of General Counsel, Office of Equal Opportunity, and the University Chaplaincy) on a wide variety of campus programs and initiatives. The department builds programs and policies that foster community, promote citizenship, and provide students with a residential experience that is a vital component of their education at Tufts.

Reporting to the Associate Dean of Student Affairs, the Director of Residential Life provides strategic leadership for an integrated residential program that is the foundation of co-curricular engagement at a highly selective, student-centered research university. A key member of the Division s senior management team, the Director will help shape and implement a departmental vision that deepens co-curricular learning, fosters pluralism and inclusion, and promotes holistic wellness among undergraduate and graduate students at Tufts. Through leadership of 7 professional staff and over 100 student leaders, the successful Director will develop and lead an operational and educationally based program that fosters vibrant community at Tufts.

The Director supervises the Associate Director of Residential Education, Associate Director of Housing Operations, and Administrative Assistant, and indirectly supervises housing operations professionals and three Assistant Directors of Residential Life in the daily operations of ORLL. The Director will also lead this team as they pursue the following common goals:
Providing cohesive residential programs that support a true first-year experience, including pre-major advising, independent living skill development, health promotion, and social justice programming;
Continuing to offer developmentally appropriate engagement opportunities for sophomore, junior, and senior students;
Developing the Residential Life student staff, Graduate Residence Director, and the Scholars-In-Residence programs;
Strengthening the recruitment, selection, support, and training of student staff to include a broader spectrum of student leaders and engagement styles;
Integrating faculty involvement into residential, student-facing programs and building collaborative, intersectional partnerships across the university;
Developing ongoing student staff training to provide continuous year-round growth of facilitation, program design, and crisis intervention skills;
Participating in a multi-year residential capital improvement program aimed at increasing on-campus housing opportunities for juniors and seniors;
Advising University leaders on campus renewal projects that revitalize existing spaces and provide residential settings that align with the Division s principles;
Providing more robust resources for students seeking off-campus leases in Medford, Somerville, or Boston and helping off-campus students stay engaged with activities on campus.
Cultivating collaborative relationships with colleagues throughout the Division of Student Affairs is essential for success. The Director will partner with colleagues to address student-related issues of concern through the Student Judicial Process, Case Management Team, and Health Accommodations and Medical Leave Committee. Additional responsibilities include crisis-management leadership; oversight of housing operations; strategic allocation of departmental resources, and diligent stewardship of department budgets. The Director will also serve as a visible and active presence in support of student events and initiatives, design assessment practices focused on student learning and department efficacy, resolve conflicts within the residential environment, serve in the Dean of Student Affairs on-call rotation, work with parents and families in support of their student and remain committed to student-centered decision-making.


Qualifications:

Basic Requirements:

• Master s degree.
• 7 years of significant, progressive leadership and management experience in student affairs, residential life, housing operations, or residential education.
• Significant budget management experience.
• Demonstrated commitment to pluralism and inclusion.
• Experience training, supervising, and developing a diverse professional and student staff is required.
• Expertise in conflict resolution and mediation; capacity to address nuanced problems with sensitivity and discretion.
• High degree of organizational skill and attention to detail; ability to supervise a highly-visible, student-facing department with sound judgment and an educational/developmental approach.
• Excellent interpersonal, critical thinking and oral and written communication skills; ability to manage and evaluate competing priorities and juggle multiple tasks.
• Demonstrated ability to integrate software and technology to enhance operations.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications:

• A demonstrated understanding of strategic planning, experience utilizing data and assessment to inform decision making, and effective program development skills are all preferred.
• Familiarity with case management and housing software, including StarRez, Maxient, or similar systems.
• Experience partnering with faculty and graduate students to create a living and learning environment within a residential program.
• Experience working effectively with young adults, families, faculty, and staff members, preferably within a similar higher education setting.

Special Work Schedule Requirements:
Some evening and weekend commitments required.
