Position/Job Summary

Perform patrol, inspection, parking services, and/or related duties to provide a comprehensive program of security, parking, and related public safety services. Participate in directing traffic and enforcing parking rules and regulations, assist with crowd control for special events, issue citations, and respond to various alarms and assist with drills; make inspections of facilities for security breaches and fire and safety hazards/risks; perform crime prevention duties and related assignments. Provide operational assistance in support of Parking Services; issue permits, receive payments and provide information. Serve as primary backup for the communications specialist and designated "runner", providing "runner service" as required by NFPA . The incumbent is also considered to be essential personnel and will be subject to reporting to work or remaining at work on occasion and without advance notice dependent upon the nature and urgency of the situation and as conditions or circumstances warrant.

Position/Job Responsibilities

1. Patrol assigned campus zones primarily on foot to monitor occupancy and use of facilities, building lockups, abandoned and lost property, road and sidewalk conditions, and damage to buildings, grounds and facilities; secure areas and equipment and unlocked safes; report conditions or acts disrupting or hazardous to community life or property. Maintain contact with on duty personnel.

2. Provide "runner service" to the dispatch center primary operator. The runner shall be available for prompt dispatching, when necessary, to the protected premises to restore systems, reset and silence equipment transmitting fire alarm or supervisory or trouble signals. Runner duties take precedence over all other duties of this position. The designated runner will be required to check-in with the Dispatch Center at 15 minute intervals. This check-in shall be logged electronically with a CAD entry.

3. Develop and demonstrate a multicultural awareness and contribute to cultivating an inclusive, diverse and respectful College community. Demonstrate civil and inclusive behavior when interacting with staff, faculty, students and visitors to the College. Promote a flexible, collaborative and inclusive work and living environment and engage in educational opportunities to increase awareness and understanding of diversity and inclusion.

4. Respond to authorized key calls of students, faculty, staff, administration, maintenance workers and contractors. Provide assistance to on duty personnel as needed and assist students locked out of vehicles and jump starts.

5. Respond to various alarms in accordance with departmental procedures and assist with campus fire drills as directed.

6. Perform visual inspections of fire safety equipment such as fire extinguishers, lighting, exit signs, call boxes, elevator phones and blue lights to ensure proper functionality and document and report any maintenance needs.

7. Provide operational assistance in the area of Parking Services and perform parking enforcement duties to include customer service, issuing summons and towing of vehicles, monitor and enforce all campus parking related rules and regulations, ensure vehicles have proper parking permits and identify and report use of fraudulent parking permits, issuing parking related permits, utilize the T2 parking system software, receive and process parking fines, assist with all financial related responsibilities of Parking Services, provide training, guidance and direction to student ticket writers and student workers issuing permits and receiving fines and other payments; train students and new staff on summons writing procedures and all applicable rules, regulations and policies with regard to the issuance of summons.

8. Participate in and provide support for special events. Participate in traffic and crowd control at special events such as sporting events, commencement, freshman orientation, registration, and other special events.

9. Serve as field training officer in the areas of security and communications as assigned by a sergeant to include training on policies and procedures, supervising activities of the trainee, and documentation of trainee progress.

10. Serve in the capacity of Communications Specialist as needed or assigned; receive emergency and non-emergency calls requesting public safety assistance; determine nature, location and priority of the call and dispatch patrol cars and personnel accordingly; assume responsibility for coordinating radio communication between personnel on duty and off campus agencies. Contact fire and ambulance and other law enforcement agencies in emergency situations and coordinate proper response. Maintain communication with personnel, track location, conditions of situation, and respond to requests for assistance; Operate two-way radio, cell phone and/or land line telephone.

11. Service as liaison with students, staff, faculty, administrators, and guests and provide general information and direction to students, parents and campus visitors.

12. Provide emergency first aid response to members of the College community and visitors in accordance with established procedures. Operate the traffic vehicle and escort emergency vehicles to various locations on campus

13. Provide administrative support and process a variety of reports and records including parking enforcement and parking-related complaint reports, service requests, security violation reports, fire safety reports, voluntary and supplementary reports, ARMS reports, and Judicial Action reports; maintain records, ensure integrity of logs; issue radios, keys and other equipment.

Position/Job Qualifications

High school diploma or GED and previous experience working in the security field; strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to effectively work and interact respectfully within a diverse and inclusive environment; ability to successfully complete the New York State Security Guard training, specialized emergency communications/dispatch training, and the Ithaca College Office of Public Safety field training and evaluation program; a minimum of 21 years of age; possession of or ability to obtain a New York State driver's license and must meet the eligibility requirements to drive a College vehicle (please see policy on driving college vehicles for more information http://www.ithaca.edu/policies/vol2/volume_2-216/); ability and flexibility to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, special events, and overtime (scheduled and unscheduled), and demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties of the position are required.
