Description/Job Summary
Overview:
A Police Officer Supervisor is the supervisory level of law enforcement at the College. Employees in this classification supervise police officers and Building Security personnel performing campus policing to ensure the safety and security of the College, its students, employees, guests, buildings and property. This position receives general supervision from the Deputy Director and the Director of Public Safety.
Responsibilities/Duties
A Police Supervisor is responsible to:
- Provide the full level of law enforcement work, enforcing laws, rules, and regulations governing the safety and protection of individuals, buildings, and property
- Provide supervision, guidance, and or assistance to the police sergeants, lower level police officers, and building guards
- Conduct training and continuing education for public safety personnel
- Respond to calls for assistance and emergency service and take appropriate supervisory action
- Conduct the investigation of supervisor complains and incidents involving public safety personnel
- Assist the Director and Deputy Director in the management and maintenance of the department's equipment
- Review and assist with cases for court, including testifying in court when necessary
- Interact with college community and establish a rapport with the public
- Provide the public with safety information
- Conduct community related public safety programs
- Collaborate with local and state law enforcement agencies when needed
- Direct traffic and assist with crowd control
- Perform related duties as assigned
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
- Ability to interpret and apply laws, policies, and procedures
- Ability to determine when laws and college policies have been violated and taking appropriate actions
- Ability to supervise, train and lead Police Sergeants, lower level police officers, and security personnel
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all members of the college community including students, faculty, staff, and administrators in a multi-cultural environment
- Ability to operate a police car, police radio, and other equipment or weapons as required (i.e. side handle baton, handcuffs, first aid equipment, etc.)
- Ability to work effectively under pressure
- Ability to quickly analyze complex, sensitive, and/or hazardous situations and issues and quickly devise solutions and action plans
- Ability to exercise sound judgement in evaluating situations and in making decisions
- Knowledge of modern law enforcement practices and methods
- Knowledge of related federal and state criminal laws
- Knowledge of the principles and methods of crime investigation, techniques of interrogation, and the identification and preservation of physical evidence
- Knowledge of the laws and protocols of arrest and evidence
- Knowledge of the principles and methods of crime prevention
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of crowd control and group behavior
- Knowledge of police communications equipment
- Skill in the use of police equipment
This position regularly works both indoors and outdoors. The position also works under exposure to injury resulting from dangerous weapons, physical violence, moving traffic or hazardous physical activities; is subject to verbal and physical abuse; works in all types of weather conditions and at all times of day; operates motor vehicles at high speeds for pursuit or emergency response purposes; and interacts with individuals under physical and/or emotional stress. Duties may require the operation of a motor vehicle. The position may be subject to call-in during emergencies and staffing shortages and may work a rotating shift, holidays and weekends. The work environment is highly diverse and demands a high level of cultural competence in interpersonal communications and interactions.
Physical Demands:
Duties require physical health, strength, agility and stamina. The work may entail sitting, standing, walking, running, bending, stooping, reaching, lifting, crawling, kneeling, climbing and lifting and transporting both objects and persons. Work requires eye-hand coordination, manual dexterity, near vision acuity, and the ability to see and read printed material and computer screens. Duties involve oral, written, electronics, and telephonic communication.
Required Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Associate of Arts degree in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement or related field OR-
- Two (2) years of permanent rank supervision experience as a Police Sergeant or a higher ranking position (in lieu of AA degree)
- Must be currently employed as a Maryland Police Training Commission Certified Police Officer; OR be formerly employed as such with a lapse in service no greater than three years; OR demonstrate ability to obtain certification as described in the Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR)
- Must possess a unrestricted non-commercial driver's license valid in the state of Maryland
- This position requires a background check

- This is an essential/emergency position
- This position is subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with COMAR
