Master Instructor of Dance

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:         

  • Creating and teaching choreography for musical theatre productions and/or musical ensemble productions; 
  • Preparing, instructing, and grading both academic and performance Dance class coursework;  
  • Assigning final grades to all assigned courses;
  • Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours to meet with students;
  • Serving effectively on college committees;
  • Serving the community;
  • Designing and maintaining Dance curriculum;
  • Establishing an effective recruitment, retention, and completion plan;
  • Creating and instructing faculty/staff fitness courses;
  • Working with area high schools to encourage and develop Dual Enrollment in Dance program courses.  

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master’s degree in Dance or Fine Arts; 
  • Ability to serve in the capacity of Dance Program Director;
  • Proven knowledge and experience in teaching dance disciplines to include but not limited to: Jazz, Modern Dance, Ballet, Rhythmic Analysis, Dance Composition, Movement for Stage, Ballroom Dance, and Dance Performance;
  • Proven knowledge and a minimum of two (2) year’s of experience in the choreography for musical theatre productions;
  • Ability to recognize and to respond to the individual differences of students from a culturally diverse student population;
  • Willingness to make students active partners in the teaching/learning process;
  • Experience in utilizing computers in the classroom to include the ability to apply technology and innovative approaches to the teaching of Dance;
  • Excellent communication skills – both verbal and written;
  • Ability to create and maintain appropriate Online Learning Environment course materials as determined by the college;
  • All instructors must meet the appropriate credentialing requirements for the Southern Association for Colleges and Schools (SACS).  
  • Preference shall be given to the following:
  • Minimum of two (2) years of teaching experience in a college or other post-secondary institution setting;
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in regional and/or professional dance companies and/or professional entertainment companies.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Duties and responsibilities associated with teaching a minimum of 36 semester hours annually;
  • Preparing a syllabus for each course;
  • Instructing assigned classes;
  • Appropriately integrating computer software and technology-based instruction;
  • Maintaining a safe and effective classroom environment;
  • Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours to meet with students;
  • Grading all quizzes, tests, and written assignments;
  • Assigning final grades;Supporting students’ professional development through appropriate organizations;
  • Collaborating with Performing Arts faculty and staff in the preparation of productions for the Performing Arts season;
  • Choreographing dance concerts for production during the Performing Arts season;
  • Providing student dance performances for special college events as assigned;
  • Participating in departmental budget preparation, course planning and development, and quality improvement processes;
  • Assisting with departmental/divisional projects and programs;
  • Participating in the recruitment of, and retention activities for students;
  • Participating in departmental, division, and general faculty meetings, applicable college committee activities, and other forms of college service;
  • Completing other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position requires an ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time and to present verbal lectures/demonstrations, walk, bend, lift, reach up, stoop, and carry items occasionally in excess of twenty-five (25) pounds.  Some lifting of computer and electronic equipment may be required.  It also requires manual dexterity to operate standard office machines, such as, copier, fax, calculator, telephone, and other equipment as necessary.  IRSC expects its employees to follow proper safety standards while employed by the College
