Duties and Responsibilities
Summary:
The Vice Dean for Research ( VDR ) is a senior-level position reporting directly to the Dean of the Stritch School of Medicine ( SSOM ). The VDR will work with the dean to expand and oversee the research enterprise with a focus on scholarly excellence across the continuum of basic, translational, and clinical investigation. The VDR works closely with the Dean s senior staff, notably the Vice Dean for Administration who oversees research operations and the Vice Dean for Education, the basic science and clinical departmental chairs, and the Loyola University Chicago ( LUC ) offices of advancement and governmental affairs. An essential partnership is with the Loyola University Heath System ( LUHS ), as well as the Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital. Reporting to the VDR are the directors of research institutes, centers, and cores and the Associate Deans overseeing the biomedical graduate programs and postdoctoral affairs. The VDR works externally with the leadership of foundations and agencies, and academic, industrial and community research partners.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Works with the Dean to develop and implement strategic plans, faculty hiring and support for basic, translational, and clinical research in SSOM and LUHS and in collaboration with LUC .
On behalf of the Dean the VDR oversees:
- research institutes, centers and cores - research mentoring programs for junior faculty and physician-scientists - evaluation and distribution of faculty research pilot project awards - development of strategic research initiatives - nomination of faculty for external awards - research policies including space utilization - biomedical graduate programs and school
Identifies emerging opportunities and develops resources to enhance the research enterprise
Cultivates research partnerships with academic and nonacademic research entities
Serves when called as a representative with federal and state agencies
Works with the Vice Dean for Administration to ensure that infrastructure meet the needs of the research enterprise
Performs other duties as required

M.D./Ph.D., M.D., D.O., or Ph.D. with federally funded research, broad experience in all aspects of basic, translational and clinical research experience; a physician-scientist is preferred

Demonstrated evidence of strong interpersonal and communications skills
