Institutional Review Board Coordinator - Office of the Vice Provost for Research

The Office of the Vice Provost for Research (OVPR) is responsible for pre- and post-award administration of grants and contracts; protection, management, and licensing of the University s intellectual property; oversight of the use of human subjects and laboratory animals in research and teaching and the use of infectious agents and recombinant DNA; implementation of the University s policies on conflict of interest in research and misconduct in research and scholarship, and for working with other administrative offices to create an environment at the University that encourages and facilitates research. The OVPR assures that the services and resources provided by the units under its direction meet the needs of the research community and, in cooperation with the Vice President for Finance, satisfies the requirements of laws and regulations that govern research, and protecting the University s interests. This includes policy development, strategic planning, and oversight. The OVPR staff also work closely with the research leadership of the schools and Tufts Medical Center to promote cooperation, collaboration, and sharing of resources to maintain a positive working relationship between the schools and with the hospital. The OVPR maintains close working relationships with faculty and department chairs in order to keep abreast of the needs and direction of research and to foster an environment of open communication and responsiveness.

The Institutional Review Board (IRB) is a federally mandated committee that reviews all human subject research proposals to ensure that protocols are in place for the protection and welfare of human research participants. The Social, Behavioral, and Educational Research (SBER) IRB is responsible for the oversight of the human subject protections program for social sciences at Tufts University.

This is a dynamic position; involving every aspect of IRB administration and liaison with faculty, students and staff in many departments. The IRB Coordinator is responsible for facilitating all aspects of committee meetings. Duties include intake of IRB protocol applications, preparing agenda and minutes for meetings, working with committee members to ensure quorum for meetings, and working with IRB office systems to ready protocols for review. The IRB Coordinator provides advice and assistance to investigators and works closely with the IRB Operations Manager to ensure timely and accurate execution of all administrative functions. Specifically, the IRB Coordinator is responsible for data entry, data integrity, communication of action items between committee and investigators, and record management, including archiving and supervising the IRB workload of student interns and OVPR administrative core staff. He/she also provides IRB office phone and email coverage.


Qualifications:

Basic Requirements:
  • 1-3 years of experience
  • Bachelor s degree OR 3-5 years of experience
  • Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet
  • Must be well organized with a keen attention to detail.
  • Must have good written and verbal communication skills, as well as good customer service skills.
  • Must be both focused and flexible, able to multi-task and willing to pitch in at every level to get the job done.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Direct experience with IRB administration.
  • Computer experience with website design, and ability to learn new computer systems.
  • Research experience.
  • Familiarity with Federal Regulations pertaining to human subject research.
  • Career oriented, desire to grow in the position.
