Position Summary:
Position:
Full-time, 9-month (AY), tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank in the Department of Dairy Science, College of Agriculture & Life Sciences with anticipated start date of August 10, 2018. Screening of applications is expected to begin March 1st, 2018 and will continue until a suitable candidate is selected.
Description and Responsibilities:
An outstanding individual is sought to initiate research (70%) and teaching (30%) in the general areas of mucosal immunology: immunology of gut, respiratory, reproductive, or mammary systems of dairy cattle. Research approaches should emphasize molecular, cellular, and genomic tools and techniques in concert with whole-animal approaches. Intended research emphasis on dairy animals is required and experience with dairy cattle is highly desirable.
This position is being hired in the Virginia Tech's Global Systems Science Destination Area. Information on Virginia Tech's exciting Destination Area initiative can be found at http://provost.vt.edu/destination-areas.html. The Global Systems Science Destination Area is focused on the transdisciplinary study of the dynamic interplay among natural and social systems. Faculty working together in this area are collaborating toward transdisciplinary solutions to critical social problems emergent from human activity and environmental change. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to engage in transdisciplinary research, curriculum, and/or outreach initiatives with other university faculty working in the Global Systems Science Destination Area.
Responsibilities will include 1) establishment of a vigorous, extramurally funded research program with national and international recognition, 2) development and instruction of a graduate-level course on animal health and immunology in the On-line Master's of Agriculture and Life Sciences program (https://www.cals.vt.edu/academic-programs/onlin.html), and 3) instruction of an undergraduate-level course on dairy animal health and immunology. Recruitment and mentoring of MS and Ph.D. graduate students is expected. The successful candidate must be able to function in a team setting of faculty, staff, industry leaders, stakeholders, and graduate and undergraduate students, and is expected to regularly publish research results in refereed journals. Interdisciplinary collaboration with scientists in the Departments of Animal and Poultry Sciences, Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Food Science and Technology, Human Nutrition Foods and Exercise, the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, and/or the Fralin Life Sciences Institute is expected.

Required Qualifications:
Minimum qualifications and experience for this position are a doctorate in Dairy, Animal, or Veterinary Sciences, Biological Sciences, Molecular Biology, or related areas with research experience emphasizing dairy cattle. Evidence of strong communication and teamwork skills that will enable interaction with student, academic, industry, and public audiences across disciplines is essential.

Preferred Qualifications:
Post-doctoral training, a demonstrated publication record, and ability to obtain external funding are preferred. Experience working with dairy cattle and the dairy industry is preferred. Demonstrated experience with interdisciplinary teaching and/or research in areas that align with Virginia Tech's university-wide, multi-disciplinary focus on Global Systems Science is also preferred.
