Admissions Counselor - School of Dental Medicine

The Admissions department manages application processing for nearly 4000 DMD applications, 1000 postgraduate applications and 600 international DMD applications each year. This includes selection of DMD, and DIS candidates for interviews, as well as coordination for, and participation in, 60, or more, interview days each year and special events.

The Admissions Counselor works with a professional Admissions team to fulfill the enrollment objectives set by the Dean for the school. S/he reads and evaluates applications for admission by reviewing 4-year DMD applications and assists in selecting candidates for interview. Admissions Counselors make presentations about programs on behalf of Admissions Office, including virtual presentations, and others, on and off campus as needed. Preparing DMD statistics for meetings, including Admissions Committee, Executive Faculty, and other meetings requiring statistical data are responsibilities of Admissions Counselor. Additional responsibilities include preparing Newsletters, PowerPoint Presentations as needed, providing logistical support for International Student Program, and Post Graduate programs. Supervising administrative assistants, or student workers, if any, and closely working with Director and Associate Director and Director, in implementing processes for matriculation, are roles included. Admissions Counselors coordinate DMD & IS interview dates, and makes presentations to these groups on interview day. Duties include working closely with Associate Director of Admissions in development of Vertical Integration matches, and providing assistance to the Director of Admissions, Associate Director of Admissions, and the Associate Dean for Admissions and Student Affairs as needed. S/he conducts group information sessions for prospective students and represents the university at schools and college fairs during travel to assigned geographic recruitment territory. This individual assists the Associate Director, and Director of Admissions, Recruitment and Outreach, with the coordination of specific recruitment initiatives such as publications or social media strategy.

The Admissions Officer s primary duties include the exercise of discretion and independent judgement in many areas. When reviewing applications, they must exercise judgement in determining an applicant s interview worthiness by making assessments of their micro-motor dexterity, leadership skills, motivation, commitment to community service, and realistic self-appraisal and professionalism, and consider many other discerning factors. They must also exercise judgement and discretion in communicating with applicants and their parents when disseminating information regarding applications and significant individual personal matters. They must also provide advice to pre-dental students who have not yet applied to dental school, and applicants who were not selected for positions in the class.


Qualifications:

Basic Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree and up to 5 years of related experience, as a student employee or professional in a secondary school or institution of higher education. Master s degree receives strong consideration.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Admissions experience in higher ed, customer service, alumni relations, previous recruitment experience.
Special Work Schedule Requirements:
Position requires travel and limited non-standard work schedule.
