Post Doctoral Researcher in Meta-Genomics and Viral Ecology

Genome to Phenome investigations for Viruses of Microbes (VoMs)

Post-doctoral opportunity

The Viral Ecology & Informatics Lab (VEIL - http://microeco.org) at the University of Delaware is seeking candidates for a post-doctoral research position in metagenomics and viral ecology. The post-doctoral fellow will work under the supervision of Dr. K. Eric Wommack and Dr. Shawn Polson and will be an integral part of a large, multi-institutional, multi-investigator project aimed at uncovering genome to phenome (G2P) links in ecologically-important viral-host systems. Through our collective work, the investigator team seeks to develop a greater understanding of the phenomic features of viral-host interaction networks within ecosystems and connect phenotypic features to genotypic features of viruses and their microbial hosts. A diverse range of approaches - genomic and metagenomic sequencing, bioinformatic analysis and tool development, cultivation of viruses of microbes, and microfluidics - will be employed in the project, affording the successful candidate broad experience in the application of state-of-the-art tools in microbial ecology.

Successful candidates will have a record of scientific achievement in environmental microbiology or microbial ecology and have demonstrated skills in the application of bioinformatic analysis of genomic and metagenomic data within these disciplines. Experience in wet-bench molecular biology and microbiology are highly desirable. In addition to demonstrating intellectual capabilities and a keen scientific interest in the varied topic areas of the project, successful applicants must be willing to participate in an ambitious and sustained scientific outreach program for middle school students within each jurisdiction.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in microbiology, virology, microbial ecology, or a closely related discipline, as well as strong quantitative and writing skills. The position is available for a year, with renewal for one year contingent upon performance and funding. The University of Delaware hosts a highly research-active and collaborative community of microbiologists. The postdoctoral researcher will have the opportunity to interact with this local group as well as the broader group of researchers from the University of Nebraska, Roger Williams University and the University of Hawaii.

The University of Delaware values diversity in its faculty, staff, and students and strongly encourages applications from women and members of underrepresented minority groups. Candidates should submit a cover letter, statement of research interests, CV, name and contact information for three to five references, and graduate transcript (unofficial transcripts accepted) through the University of Delaware Jobs website. If they have not yet graduated, applicants should indicate in their cover letter the date by which they anticipate having their doctoral degree conferred.

Additional information is available by contacting Barbra Ferrell ( ferrellb@udel.edu ). The position is available starting immediately and open until filled.
