Postdoctoral Associate

Position Summary:
A Postdoctoral Associate position in natural products chemistry is expected to be available starting February 1, 2018 or later in Professor David Kingston's laboratory in the Department of Chemistry, M/C 0212, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia, 24061. The work will involve the bioassay-guided isolation and structure elucidation of bioactive natural products. Isolation will require the use of modern HPLC equipment, and structure elucidation will require the use of high field 1D- and 2D- NMR spectroscopy and the interpretation of mass spectra. Preference will be given to candidates with excellent hands-on experience with HPLC separations and with NMR spectroscopy and with the isolation and structure elucidation of natural products. Applicants must have received the Ph.D. degree in natural products chemistry or in pharmacognosy or a related field, and preference will be given to candidates with prior postdoctoral experience. The salary will be commensurate with experience, and will include fringe benefits. Appointment will be for one year in the first instance, but may be renewed by mutual agreement.
Duties and responsibilities Include but aren't limited to:
- Isolate bioactive natural products by bioassay-guided fractionation.
- Elucidate structures of isolated natural products by spectroscopic and chemical methods.
- Obtain 1D- and 2D- NMR spectra on Varian INOVA 400 and Bruker 500 and 600 NMR spectrometers
- Carry out chemical conversions to establish structures.
-Prepare regular written progress reports.
-Submit manuscripts based on work to peer reviewed journals and present results at national conferences.
-Work with faculty supervisor and students.
-Take the initiative in finding solutions to scientific problems that arise on a day-to-day research.
-Pursue research goals with routine consultation, but limited supervision.
-Supervise/train undergraduate or graduate students in laboratory procedures.
-Assist in project design, execution, and interpretation of research projects to gain practical experience in the field.
-Prepare professional presentations, professional reports, and publications.
-Engage in collaborative work with peers to achieve research objectives.

Required Qualifications:
-Recent doctoral degree in natural products chemistry, pharmacognosy, or appropriate related field, completed by the time of appointment.
- Strong natural products isolation chemistry skills.
- Strong NMR interpretation skills
-Strong work habits and the ability to work independently as well as with a research group.
-Strong communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Hands-on experience with HPLC equipment.
- Hands-on experience with obtaining NMR spectra
-Evidence of good project management.
-Evidence of developing publications based on research.
-Ability to work under limited supervision.
-Creativity, independence and high motivation.
-Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel in the organization.
