Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for all aspects of running and maintaining the Princeton University Art Museum's retail and wholesale business, including operating its Museum Store in advancement of the Museum's mission. This includes sourcing, buying, and displaying products; product development; planning and ensuring creation of all Store-related print and online marketing; managing the Museum's mail order business for publications; staffing; developing and monitoring a budget that includes paying for salaries of all Store staff; maintaining financial and inventory records; maintaining and enriching an online retail presence; and maintaining a point-of-sale system. They will be a creative and self-motivated individual with a team-based approach and a strong attention to detail. Primary responsibilities include:

  • Managing regular, student, and intern staff, including assurance of visitor services and customer relations efforts
  • Execution of all store operations
  • Performing all buying and product development, including a special emphasis on artisan-designed product and developing and maintaining relationships with artisans
  • Planning and ensuring creation of all store-related print and online marketing, public relations and community outreach events
  • Planning for growth of the Museum Store, including the possibility of a larger venue or multiple venues
  • Administering Retail Pro Inventory Control, Point of Sale (POS), and Merchandising database system along with all related financial functions and responsibilities
  • Special projects as needed


Qualifications

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 4-6 years experience in high-end retail operations in a time-intense environment with supervisory experience and responsibility for procurement including bidding, evaluation and quality control, product security and transport and experience with multiple sites and on-line retail operations.
  • Strong business experience in fiscal management, accounting fundamentals, relevant tax and business practices, profit and loss statements, long-range business plans and forecasting, and command of specialized retail mathematical planning such as stock and sales plans and open to buy calculations.
  • Extensive product knowledge and broad experience of product development, with high level of understanding of production values in many classifications of merchandise from print publications to textiles to glassblowing.
  • Demonstration of best retail practices from store design and fixturing to POS systems to trends in home and consumer goods.
  • Extensive marketing and advertising experience in multimedia formats including print, web, and social media.
  • High degree of organization, self-motivation, and attention to detail, including ability to juggle complex and multiple business priorities.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate a team of staff effectively, as well as interacting with a diverse business population with specialized needs and with the public.
