Position Summary:
Supporting HR Services Team members, the Benefits Specialist coordinates with appropriate parties to assist with complete and timely decisions regarding health insurance enrollment, Extended Coverage/ COBRA , and retirement related options. This position provides a key coordinating role prior to and during Open Enrollment, as well as other periods of heavy activity within HR Services; provides assistance with the retirement distribution process for Defined Contribution Plans and VRS /Advantage 65 Plan, and coordinating responsibilities with the administration of optional benefits programs such as Legal Resources and Aflac programs; handles various reconciliation functions, and provides backup in HokieMart and Orientation presentations. This position will be tasked with producing accurate and timely reports for a variety of purposes, and possibly handling large amounts of data. The role requires strong communication skills to convey information both verbally and written to/from employees, team members, vendors and others, and will be required to provide occasional administrative support.

Required Qualifications:
- Benefits experience such as working with group health care plans, retirement plans and/or other benefits programs.
- Experience working with human resources policies and procedures.
- Experience providing administrative and/or program support in an academic or professional environment.
- Proficiency in software applications such as MS Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and with creating and preparing a variety of professional documents such as letters, announcements, and company communications.
- Experience utilizing HRIS databases.
- Ability to navigate the web for research/information gathering.
- Ability to work within the guidelines of government regulations relating to benefits.
- Ability to independently organize, plan, prioritize work, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to effectively interpret and disseminate policies and procedures to the public.
- Ability to analyze data, draw conclusions, exercise sound judgment, and prepare reports.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and ability to interact comfortably with all individuals in a diverse multicultural environment.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in human resources, business or a related field or equivalent level of training and/or experience.
- Experience working with Benefits and/or Retirement programs within a university or state agency setting.
- Experience with COBRA regulations and notices.
- Experience with mail merge.
- Previous experience with databases such as Banner.
