Research Technologist II


Position Summary
Coordinate and maintain experiments in support of insect ecology and conservation program, consisting of lab, greenhouse and field plot maintenance; use of agricultural equipment; collecting and collating data; assists in compiling test results and preparing information for reports, publications and presentations; ordering supplies; overseeing lab operations and supervising student employees. Work hours are generally between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm, but some evening and weekend work will be required. Duties associated with this position involve mildly disagreeable working conditions involving some manual labor and lifting. The job involves standing and manual dexterity for microscopic examinations. Out-of-state travel to research meetings may be required.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge normally acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Entomology, Zoology or other related field of study; six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in performing basic entomology research techniques, insect sample preparation, identification, and curation; experience in entomology, lab management, field work and data management; use of agricultural equipment; word processing, spreadsheet; database and/or desktop publishing software; presentation software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Possession of a valid vehicle operator's license. The job requires obtaining a pesticide applicator's license.

Desired Qualifications
Master's degree in Entomology or related field; experience or education in ecology, conservation biology, landscape ecology, predator-prey interactions, pollination biology, agricultural cropping systems; experience with field and laboratory research; experience maintaining insect cultures and plants; experience using Geographic Information Systems (GIS); a demonstrated ability to supervise student employees; experience making outreach presentations.
