Retention & Advising Specialist



Eastern Washington University invites applications for an Outreach and Retention Specialist in the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP).


CAMP is a federally funded program designed to support students from migrant and seasonal farm worker backgrounds during their first year of college. The program provides students with financial assistance and support services, with the goal of preparing them to continue their education at a four year-college or university.


Under general direction, this position is responsible for developing and implementing the student recruitment plan for the CAMP. In this capacity, this position will be making recruitment visits, and monitoring admissions and helping make CAMP student selections; assisting potential CAMP students and their families with college and financial aid applications; developing/maintaining relationships with migrant student providers, school districts, and community organizations; assisting with retention support services in various areas including enrollment, financial aid, college orientation; providing student advocacy; assisting in coordinating educational/cultural activities; training and supervising a graduate to help in outreach, filing; and other duties related to the CAMP program.


In the course of performing the position's duties, this position will have extensive involvement with students, staff and the public in carrying out program activities, and will coordinate, schedule and monitor program activities to determine consistency with program goals. Position reports directly to the Director of the CAMP.

Conditions of Employment

This position, during the course of university employment will be involved in the receipt of, or accountability for, university funds or other items of value; as well as the unsupervised access with the developmentally disabled, vulnerable adults or children under the age of 16. Successful applicant will be required to pass a background check for continued employment.


Extensive travel within Washington State, Oregon, and Idaho will be required, primarily during the fall and spring. Travel at other times of year may also be required to fulfill job responsibilities. Trips will include same-day trips, overnight, and multi-day trips. As a result, the following are all requirements for the job:



  1. Candidate hired for the position must have a valid driver's license, proof of insurance, and clear driving record (no restrictions, no DUI or other convictions).

  2. Consistent access to a personal vehicle; note: use of a personal vehicle is reimbursed in accordance with rates as specified within university policy.

  3. Flexibility to travel as needed to fulfill job responsibilities, and as specified by supervisor.


Position works 11 months each year. Unpaid time off equal to one month will be scheduled by supervisor at times throughout the year to coincide with times where the position's services are not needed.



Physical Demands

Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds, such as boxes of recruitment materials.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in education, counseling, or other related field

  • Prior work experience in admissions, financial aid, or another area of student services, familiarity or work experience with migrant students.

  • Prior experience working with and providing student support services.

  • Strong communication and organizational skills and must be bilingual/bicultural in English/Spanish.

  • Meet travel requirements associated with student recruitment (see Conditions of Employment).

  • Experience in managing files

  • Candidates must demonstrate ability, interest or experience in promoting cultural competency, universal accessibility and/or diversity.




Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in an educational or social service environment

  • Experience with student recruitment and outreach as part of a grant funded program




Other Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to be accountable for reaching goals defined by supervisor
