Overview

The Office of the Vice President of Campus Life is seeking an extraordinary professional to lead its Office of Career Services. The executive director reports directly to the Vice President for Campus Life, oversees a staff of more than twenty employees, and serves on the senior leadership team for Campus Life.

The mission of Career Services is to help students define a unique career and life vision, and then connect them in multi-dimensional, personalized ways to the resources, people, organizations and opportunities that will enable them to make their visions a reality. Beginning the first year at Princeton, Career Services engages students in self-exploration and reflection helping them learn how to use their experiences—classwork, co-curricular activities, jobs and internships—to develop a better understanding of themselves and their interests. Offering individual appointments and a wide range of professional development, networking and recruiting programs, the office assists with all aspects of career planning and decision-making including self-assessment; choice of major/career field; exploration of career-related interests; development of career-related engagement between students and alumni; pursuit of internships and other experiential opportunities; and application to graduate/professional school.

Responsibilities

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide leadership and set the overall strategy for career-related programs and delivery systems designed to enhance career development and career competencies of students.

  • Lead an advisory council that includes employers, alumni, faculty members, administrators, and leaders in employment sectors.

  • Strengthen and expand partnerships with a wide stakeholder base of outside constituencies including employers from all industry sectors (the focus being on c-suite leaders).

  • Consider and implement emerging technologies that enhance the accessibility of career development and student employment services.

  • Oversee Career Services strategic planning efforts, annual goal setting, development, and coordinator of assessment efforts; coordinate the preparation of departmental reports and articulate outcomes to internal and external constituents.

  • Foster alumni involvement in the career development of Princeton undergraduate and graduate students through recruiting, networking and mentoring activities designed to meet changing needs in a dynamic global economy.

  • Work collaboratively across the University to ensure that career development services, programs, resources, and initiatives are effective, innovative and aligned with University and Campus Life priorities.

  • Pursue increased international career opportunities through collaboration with the Office of International Programs and overseas alumni associations.

  • Partner with the Vice President for Campus Life on fundraising efforts related to Career Services, which could provide additional resources to an already generous budget.

  • Expand on and off-campus learning opportunities in the areas of internships and community service.

  • Serve as the primary liaison between the University, its students and alumni, and potential employers on a state, regional, national, and international scale.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree is required; an advanced degree is preferred.

  • Minimum of ten years of progressive management experience is required, preferably involving liberal arts students, graduate students, or recent graduates.

  • Demonstrated skill in fostering new institutional relationships, marshaling professional networks, staff supervision, budget management and strategic planning.

  • The ability to engage faculty, trustees and senior administrators, to counsel creative, diligent, professionally ambitious and service-minded students, and to steward a deeply invested and resourceful alumni and parent population.

  • The successful candidate will be a credible champion of the liberal arts curriculum and committed to further professional development and additional community responsibilities within a residential university setting.
