Assistant Professor ? Neurobiology of Eating Behaviors

Position Summary:
The Department of Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise ( HNFE ), the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and the Virginia Tech Carillion Research Institute's Center for Transformative Research on Health Behaviors at Virginia Tech seek an outstanding individual with expertise in the neurobiology of eating behaviors. This academic year (AY), tenure-track assistant professor position will be 70% research and 30% instruction. Areas of research focus could include but are not limited to factors that influence decision-making in the context of food choice, the design and evaluation of innovative weight management strategies in children and/or adults, and the development of interventions to improve adherence to nutritional behavior change. Individuals with thriving funded research programs that use animal and/or human models to define the neurobiological influences on eating behaviors, fMRI, and behavioral and electrophysiological techniques with potential for clinical translation are stongly encouraged to apply. The ideal applicant will have the experience and expertise to develop a nationally recognized research program in neurobiology and health behaviors in HNFE , but will also interact extensively with an already existing collaborative network of neurobiologists within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the College of Science, the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute, and Carilion Clinic.
Preference will be given to applicants who can work with interdisciplinary teams and foster collaborations with existing faculty conducting clinical and translational research. This includes researchers poised to support ongoing university initiatives including the Adaptive Brain and Behavior Destination Area (http://provost.vt.edu/destination-areas/da-brain.html) and the new Virginia Tech Carillion Research Institute's Center for Transformative Research on Health Behaviors ( CTRHB ) (https://ctrhb.vtc.vt.edu/).
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to engage in transdisciplinary research, curriculum, and/or outreach initiatives with other university faculty working in the Adaptive Brain and Behavior Destination Area. The Adaptive Brain and Behavior Destination Area is focused on the transdisciplinary study of brain plasticity particularly as it pertains to decision-making, physical and psychological trauma, and healthy development across the lifespan. Faculty are working together in this area to build understanding of the brain-behavior relationship in health and the human condition to enhance resilience and well-being in the world's diverse communities.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The candidate is expected to:
• Develop a nationally and internationally recognized extramurally-funded research program to complement and expand research programs in HNFE , CALS , and the CTRHB .
• Teach 1-2 undergraduate/graduate courses per year in an area related to expertise.
• Recruit and mentor graduate students.
• Participate in advising and service/outreach activities.

Required Qualifications:
• Ph.D. in neuroscience, psychology, physiology, nutrition, or a closely related field
• Post-doctoral training
• Demonstrated ability to publish high quality, refereed publications
• The ability to work independently and collaboratively on research with others
• Demonstrated potential for obtaining extramural funding
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Commitment to quality student education

Preferred Qualifications:
• Active extramural funding
• Demonstrated experience with interdisciplinary teaching and/or research in areas that align with Virginia Tech's university-wide, multi-disciplinary focus on Adaptive Brain and Behavior.
