Research Associate-Fixed Term


Position Summary
The Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at Michigan State University invites applications for the position of Research Associate (postdoctoral researcher), under the supervision of Dr. Kim Scribner and Dr. John Robinson. The successful applicant will collect and analyze metagenomic libraries from environmental DNA (eDNA) samples to characterize aquatic communities in Michigan waters of the Great Lakes and tributaries. This position is a nineteen-month appointment with the potential for additional support contingent on performance and funding. A substantial field component is associated with the project, and the successful applicant will be expected to regularly participate in field work.

Background: There is a pressing management need for greater information and for additional assessment tools for aquatic invasive species (AIS). The Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at Michigan State University seeks a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join an inter-disciplinary university and agency research group that is developing rapid and sensitive molecular and computational methods of surveillance and monitoring for emerging and current AIS in Michigan's inland, coastal, and Great Lakes waters. Genomic and eDNA resources will be developed and applied to provide cooperating agencies and groups with information pertaining to the species composition of aquatic communities and presence of invasive species.

Minimum Requirements
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Genetics, Evolutionary Biology, or allied fields with demonstration of experience and skill in development and screening of genomic libraries, Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) development, and bioinformatics skills associated with analysis of expansive sequencing datasets.

Desired Qualifications
A substantial field component is associated with the project, and the successful applicant will be expected to regularly participate in field work; experience with eDNA sampling is preferred, but not required. Programming experience (UNIX, R, Perl) and experience with statistical tools and software associated with study design, data filtering, and genotype calling are also desirable.
