| Job Description Summary, Duties and Responsibilities, Required Qualifications and Preferred Qualifications | The Harrington School of Communication and Media at the University of Rhode Island invites applications for a tenure-line faculty position at the rank of assistant professor to begin fall 2018. We seek an academic and professional in sports communication and media to help develop and deliver a new program in this area. The successful candidate's teaching and research interests should be focused on one or more of the following: sports public relations, sports advertising, sports broadcasting, sports and society/culture, sports history, or sports journalism. The successful candidate will also be able to address values and ethics related to sports media and the professions associated with it. Preference will be given to candidates whose research and teaching traverse more than one of these areas, and who can also offer existing courses in one or more of the following areas: public relations, journalism, communication studies, film/media, writing and rhetoric, or any other related area(s) in the Harrington School curriculum. The successful candidate should demonstrate the ability to sustain an active research agenda, provide evidence of successful teaching, and show the ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and staff. Prior classroom teaching experience at the college level is preferred, as is professional experience in one of the aforementioned areas of sports media. The candidate will also be expected to oversee sports media internships and learning opportunities in collaboration with URI Athletics, WRIU radio station, and the University's Video/Sound Recording, Production, and Broadcast Center as appropriate. The candidate will also be expected to cultivate internships and experiential learning opportunities for students with sports media outlets in the region and beyond. The Harrington School of Communication and Media is a global leader in communication and media research and education. Administratively housed within the College of Arts and Sciences, the largest College at the University of Rhode Island, the Harrington School is home to programs in communication studies, film/media, journalism, library and information studies, public relations, and writing and rhetoric. The ideal candidate for this position will be an integral part of a community of 62 full-time faculty and 1400 students, and will have the opportunity to teach and work with faculty and students in our new $6.8 million communication and media hub and our soon-to-be-renovated broadcast center. Located just four miles from the famous Narragansett beach, one mile from the Amtrak line to NYC and Boston, and just over an hour from Boston and under three hours from NYC , the University of Rhode Island is strategically positioned in one of the most beautiful areas of New England. Duties and Responsibilities: The successful candidate will develop and deliver new courses in sports media and communication at introductory and advanced levels for undergraduate, and possibly graduate, students. The candidate may also teach and enhance existing course offerings. The standard workload includes three courses each semester, or 18 credit hours per year, advising undergraduate students, maintaining an active scholarly or creative program in sports media and communication, and performing service in the Harrington School, College, and University. Qualifications Required: 1. Ph.D. or M.F.A. in communication or media-related field, or a minimum of 15 years professional experience in a relevant area and a Master's degree. 2. Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver introductory and upper-level courses in one or more of the following areas: sports public relations, sports advertising, sports broadcasting, sports and society/culture, sports history, or sports journalism. 3. Demonstrated ability to develop a scholarly or creative agenda in one or more of the following areas: sports public relations, sports advertising, sports broadcasting, sports and society/culture, sports history, or sports journalism. 4. Demonstrated knowledge of digital media as it relates to sports media. 5. Demonstrated knowledge of data analytics as it relates to sports media. 6. Demonstrated strong oral communications. 7. Demonstrated proficiency in written communications. 8. Demonstrated proficiency in electronic media. 9. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations. Preferred: 1. Professional experience in a relevant area. 2. Research or creative production experience in sports communication and media. 3. Demonstrated evidence of seeking and securing funding for research or creative work. 4. Experience teaching sports communication and media at the undergraduate and/or graduate level. 5.
