The Department of Fisheries, Animal & Veterinary Science at the University of Rhode Island invites applications for a Lecturer in Animal Science.

This is an academic year position for 2018-19 with the potential for renewal. The teaching load is 12 credits per semester, which may include curriculum development.

BASIC FUNCTION :

The duties of the Animal Science Lecturer will include teaching undergraduate courses in ruminant and non-ruminant livestock management, production, evaluation, and health and disease. Course taught will also include lower- and upper- level hands-on laboratory based courses.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

In addition to the above teaching duties, the Lecturer will assist in course management and in developing pedagogies to enhance learning and retention. This may include curriculum development and supervision of teaching assistants. Additional responsibilities include: Advise/mentor undergraduate students, be involved with co-curricular programs or student clubs and organizations and participate in other activities of the Department of Fisheries, Animal & Veterinary Science and College of the Environment and Life Sciences such as committee service and student recruitment.

Qualifications

Required:

1 Earned doctorate in Animal Science or closely related area conferred by August 15, 2018.

2 Demonstrated experience with the handling and management of food production animals.

3 Demonstrated teaching experience at the college or university level as either an instructor, lecturer, or teaching assistant in the animal science field.

4. Demonstrated computer, PowerPoint and spreadsheet skills.

5. Demonstrated strong oral communication skills.

6 Demonstrated proficiency in written communications.

7. Authorized to work in the U.S. on a long-term basis.

8 Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations.

Preferred:

1. Broad experience in all aspects of livestock production systems.

2. Independent teaching of one or more undergraduate course(s) in animal science at a college or university.

3. Demonstrated skills in interactive teaching including hands-on demonstrations and active learning.

4. Experience in using on-line teaching tools to enhance student learning at the college level.

5. Experience with curriculum development and learning outcomes assessment.

6. Demonstrated ability to function independently in a complex academic environment

7. Demonstrated ability to function collaboratively in a complex academic environment

8. Demonstrated ability to work in an interdisciplinary team.
