Biosafety Specialist - Office of the Vice Provost for Research

The Office of the Vice Provost for Research (OVPR) is responsible for pre- and post-award administration of grants and contracts; protection, management, and licensing of the University s intellectual property; oversight of the use of human subjects and laboratory animals in research and teaching and the use of biohazardous agents and recombinant DNA; implementation of the University s policies on conflict of interest in research and misconduct in research and scholarship, and for working with other administrative offices to create an environment at the University that encourages and facilitates research. The OVPR assures that the services and resources provided by the units under its direction meet the needs of the research community and, in cooperation with the Vice President for Finance, satisfies the requirements of laws and regulations that govern research, and protecting the University s interests. This includes policy development, strategic planning, and oversight. The OVPR staff also work closely with the research leadership of the schools and Tufts Medical Center to promote cooperation, collaboration, and sharing of resources to maintain a positive working relationship between the schools and with the hospital. The OVPR maintains close working relationships with faculty and department chairs in order to keep abreast of the needs and direction of research and to foster an environment of open communication and responsiveness.

The Biosafety Office within the OVPR provides support to the Tufts and Tufts Medical Center communities to ensure that research and teaching activities are conducted in a safe manner that is compliant with local and federal regulations. This is accomplished by working collaboratively with the laboratory personnel, the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), and the Departments of Public and Environmental Health & Safety for each institution.

This position is to provide technical support to the Biosafety Office as it relates to laboratory biosafety audits. The successful candidate will be responsible for scheduling and carrying out biosafety audits across the Tufts campuses and for writing audit reports that are communicated to the Principal Investigators and to the IBC. The successful candidate will also collaborate with the Biosafety Officers and the IBC Office to approve registration updates involving room amendments and maintain relevant databases.


Qualifications:

Basic Requirements:
  • Bachelor s degree in molecular biology, microbiology, food/animal science or related field.
  • Must be familiar with standard laboratory procedures and operations in order to converse with researchers and provide relevant guidance.
  • Must be able to recognize unsafe conditions or work practices and identify appropriate corrective actions.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to work collaboratively.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must have excellent organizational abilities and good time management skills.
  • Must work well with tight deadlines.
  • Must have proficient computer skills.
  • Must be able to travel between campuses as necessary.
  • Must be able to use personal protective equipment, including respiratory protection, as required for access to laboratory locations.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master s degree in relevant field.
  • 1-3 years of experience in the field of biosafety, or 1-3 years of hands on experience working with biohazardous material in a research setting (BSL2 or higher).
  • Working knowledge of biohazardous materials subject to IBC oversight at Tufts, including recombinant/synthetic nucleic acids, infectious agents, biological toxins, and use of those materials in research animals.
  • Working knowledge of the BMBL and NIH Guidelines.
