Assistant Director

Position Summary:
New Student Programs at Virginia Tech enhances the student experience by fostering an inclusive, supportive, and learning-centered environment. Staff are actively engaged in the lives of our students and are committed to providing outstanding programs and services that enhance new student transition. New Student Programs is dedicated to supporting the mission of the Division of Student Affairs. Along with the new student programs team, the assistant director is critical to the development and implementation of purposeful and learning-centered programs and services. The assistant director reports to the director and works collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and community partners to manage the details and logistics of transition programs. This includes Hokie Hi (Welcome Week), Hokie Camp (Extended Orientation), and Online Orientation implementation and management.
Additionally, the assistant director will adopt and practice the Principles of Community as fundamental to Virginia Tech's on-going efforts to increase access and inclusion and to create a dynamic community that nurtures learning and growth for all of its members. Duties and Responsibilities
1. Directly assist with the coordination and implementation of comprehensive transition programs for new undergraduate students (first year and transfer students). Includes but is not limited to Hokie Hi, and Hokie Camp.
2. Recruit, select, train, supervise and evaluate undergraduate student leaders (Hokie Camp Chairs, Exec, and Hokie Camp Leaders, Welcome Week Chair(s), Welcome Week Leaders) and one graduate student.
3. Create and provide leadership development opportunities for student leaders.
4. Serve as a department liaison to the university community including the academic colleges, faculty, departments, and students who serve as partners for Hokie Hi, Hokie Camp and Online Orientation.
5. Oversee the online pre- and post- orientation process from development, implementation and management.
6. Assist in producing publications and media presentations related to New Student Programs.
7. Provide oversight for Guidebook, social media, and other emerging technology for all transition programs.
8. Assist with the assessment and evaluation of office programs and services.
9. Prepare and maintain appropriate periodic/special operations reports, budgets, and surveys.
10. Serve as an advocate for first year students, new transfer students, and students in transition.
11. Participate in, and contribute to, professional development/activities (including research, conferences, and publications)
12. Perform additional duties as assigned to support New Student Programs

Required Qualifications:
-Master's degree in student personnel, higher education or a related field and work experience in collegiate student affairs, student activities, orientation, transfer, or first year programming.
-Demonstrated orientation and transition experience
-Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion and the ability to work with a diverse group of constituents.
-Experience in designing and implementing programming or large-scale events.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective, cooperative working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and administrators participating in transition programs.

Preferred Qualifications:
-Working knowledge of student learning and development theory and practice as well as the needs/issues of First year and Transfer students.
-Demonstrated experience implementing an online orientation.
-Demonstrated organizational, leadership, communication and public relations skills.
-Experience designing and implementing formal assessment and evaluation processes.
-Capacity for organizing a wide range of diverse tasks efficiently and effectively.
-Advising/supervision experience with ability to lead undergraduate student staff.
