The Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice seeks applicants for an Assistant Professor position to begin August 2018. We are seeking a sociologist who specializes in Medical Sociology with an emphasis in health disparities or health policy. Additional areas of interest include those able to teach sociological theory and/or pursue external funding. A Ph.D. in Sociology and a demonstrated ability to conduct research, publish, and teach in sociology are required. Candidates who are ABD will be considered with the expectation that the degree be completed by August 2018.
The Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice offers Bachelor's degrees in Sociology and in Criminal Justice, M.A. Sociology, and Ph.D. Criminology & Criminal Justice. The department has an accomplished, collaborative, and diverse faculty and student body and the successful candidate should enrich this environment. Opportunities exist to participate in the ODU's Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity and the Department of Women's Studies. In addition, Eastern Virginia Medical School, the EVMS Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine, and the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters as well as numerous public, private, and military medical facilities are just minutes from the ODU campus and offer tremendous opportunities for research partnerships.
Old Dominion University is a residential and research-extensive public institution with a student enrollment of 25,000 including approximately 5,000 graduate students, and a full time equivalent diverse and multicultural faculty of over 850. The university's primary campus is located in Norfolk, VA, one of the seven cities that make up the historic Hampton Roads region of Virginia, a major recreational area with a population of 1.7 million near the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay.
