Coordinator, First Year Programs and Leadership Development


Brief Summary:

Marist College seeks a Student Affairs professional to serve as the Coordinator of First Year Programs and Leadership Development. This position is an integral member of the Student Affairs team providing assistance with orientation, first-year student transition, peer mentoring, and program development. This is an 11-month, live-on position to help facilitate the adjustment of students academically, socially, and personally to Marist College.

The Office of First Year Programs & Leadership Development (FYP & LD) is dedicated to assisting first-year students in their transition to Marist by addressing the social, cognitive and emotional challenges they encounter. New students are guided in their intellectual and personal development through campus wide projects such as Orientation and Welcome Week, as well as through a variety of academic and social programs involving small group and one-on-one mentoring. FYP & LD works with all class years by offering opportunities for leadership development to all interested undergraduate students by providing skills and experiences essential for lifelong leadership engagement. Mentor relationships are continued with students in subsequent years as they endeavor to succeed academically, become influential leaders, and develop into well-balanced citizens of the Marist and World community. Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists assigned students in clarifying their educational and life goals
  • Monitors and advises assigned students regarding academic, personal, and social maturation
  • Monitors academic progress of assigned students by regular contact with students and faculty advisors
  • Serves as a facilitator in assisting assigned students in making contact with support services
  • Responsible for the design and implementation of various programs and projects related to new student orientation, ongoing personal development, and leadership training
  • Supports and implements Student Affairs initiatives and events
  • Assists in the management of the departmental brand by monitoring area e-mail accounts and web presence including daily posts/tweets to all applicable social media outlets
  • Collaborates on the monthly student newsletter
  • Maintains records and prepares weekly, monthly, and annual reports
  • Attends student functions on a regular basis
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned in a safe and responsible manner


Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in an appropriate discipline is required; Master's Degree in higher education, counseling, or related field is preferred. At least one year of experience working with students in higher education or related field is required. Must possess excellent interpersonal, organizational, verbal, technical, and written communication skills with the ability to work closely with a diverse group of students to motivate them and create a climate conducive to the accomplishment of academic goals. Proven experience in program planning, social media planning, and the development of presentations and publications is helpful.
