Overview

The Princeton Neuroscience Institute has a Research Specialist position available for the Collaboration on Systems-level Mechanisms in Cognition (CoSMiC). This project seeks to understand how multiple brain regions work together to carry out cognitive processing, using mice as a model system for mammalian brain function. Our project, funded by the NIH BRAIN initiative, is a collaboration between the research groups of Carlos Brody, Mark Goldman (UC Davis), Jonathan Pillow, Sebastian Seung, David Tank, Sam Wang, and Ilana Witten.

Work will be performed in conjunction with the recently established Bezos Center for Neural Circuit Dynamics. The successful candidate will work with Bezos Center management and faculty to develop and support the imaging tools and peripheral instrumentation. This is initially a one-year position with the possibility of renewal likely, based on satisfactory funding and performance. A commitment of at least two years is preferred.

Responsibilities

This primary responsibility of this is a position is to provide technical support for the optical and behavioral instrumentation used within the multiple laboratories in our project. These systems will be used for large scale optical recording and optogenetic perturbation studies on the mechanisms of working memory and decision-making.

The principal activity is to assist in the implementation and maintenance of:
  • Two-photon, and three-photon, microscopes for cellular resolution calcium imaging of neural populations.
  • Virtual reality systems for rodents.
  • Wide field fluorescence microscopes for macroscopic imaging of neural dynamics across brain regions.
  • State of the art systems for combined imaging and optogenetic perturbation at cellular resolution.

Qualifications

A bachelor's degree in a science or engineering field is required. A master's or PhD degree is a plus. Experience in one or several of the following domains is required: optics, imaging, instrumentation, electronics. Experience in optical and mechanical design is a plus.

Applicants should apply online and include a cover letter stating background and professional interests, a CV, and a list of at least two potential referees, and also email this information to David Tank (dwtank@princeton.edu). Review of applications will continue until the position is filled.
