Research Technician - Neuroscience, School of Medicine

This is a grant funded position and is not eligible for severance pay.

The Department of Neuroscience is a basic research department focusing on synaptic biology and glia biology. The lab of Dr. Thomas Biederer investigates how synapses are formed and remodeled in the developing nervous system. We address this question in neuronal cultures and mouse models and apply biochemical and imaging approaches, together with mouse behavioral and in vivo electrophysiological studies.

The successful Research Technician candidate will work directly with the Principal Investigator to lead her/his own project while also supporting lab maintenance. There are four primary functions of this position:
1) Perform surgeries and electrophysiological recordings in mice, and analyze these data.
2) Perform dye injections and histochemical stainings, and analyze these data.
3) Manage the mouse colony and handle mice. This includes administration of special nutrients to pups, monitoring of mouse health, and documenting results.
4) Support lab maintenance.

Qualifications:

Basic Requirements:

The successful applicant will be exceptionally motivated to learn and successfully employ challenging methodologies after training by lab members. Applicants need to be highly organized and have excellent communications skills, both verbal and written. Specific requirements are listed below:
  • Bachelor s degree in science with up to 1 year laboratory experience.
  • Applicants are required to have experience with handling animals, especially rodents.
  • A strong motivation to learn and independently implement survival animal surgeries is required.
  • Strong data organization skills, computer and spreadsheet skills and the ability to carefully analyze large data sets are required.
  • Basic microscopy skills are required.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in surgical methods is preferred.
  • Experience in maintenance of transgenic mouse colonies is preferred.
  • Electrophysiology experience is a strong plus.

Special Work Requirements:

May work with and be exposed to hazardous chemicals and materials, human/animal tissue and fluids.
