Payload Operations Specialist

Working at MIT offers opportunities, an environment, a culture - and benefits - that just aren't found together anywhere else. If you're curious, motivated, want to be part of a unique community, and help shape the future - then take a look at this opportunity.

PAYLOAD OPERATIONS SPECIALIST, Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research (MKI), to work in the area of satellite payload operations, computational science, and exoplanets. Will participate in the programmatic and operational procedure development and execution of the operational and raw data processing pipeline for the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) , scheduled for launch by NASA in 2018. TESS is expected to discover thousands of exoplanets in orbit around the brightest stars in the sky. Will work to understand and enhance the software pipelines producing the data-collection instructions to the instrument on the TESS spacecraft and process the raw data received from the spacecraft; understand the inputs and procedures needed to operate the pipeline and interact with the NASA/project centers that provide inputs and receive outputs from the pipeline; and provide operational leadership for the Payload Operations Center (POC) and collaborate with the senior systems engineer on maintaining and enhancing the software pipelines. The pipeline code is written primarily in Python, with certain functions written in C.

The position is based at MIT and involves close interaction with project collaborators at a few NASA centers and Orbital Corp, the spacecraft builder and mission center operator. The work will require close interaction with TESS and MIT research scientists, astronomers, and engineers. Research collaborators also include the MIT departments of Physics and Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences and members of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.
