Visiting Assistant Extension Educator in Geospatial Technologies


The mission of the University of Connecticut Center for Land Use Education and Research (CLEAR) is to provide information and assistance to land use decision makers and other audiences in support of better land use decisions, healthier natural resources, and more resilient communities. CLEAR's research, outreach and training programs address the overlapping issues of water management, land use planning, climate resiliency, and geospatial technology. The geospatial technology and training program develops and conducts training in several geospatial disciplines, and develops geospatial mapping and analysis websites, tools, and applications for a wide range of users.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Visiting Assistant Extension Educator will be a member of CLEAR and a faculty member in the UConn Department of Extension, based at the Middlesex County Extension Center located in Haddam, CT. The individual in this position will work with colleagues in the CLEAR geospatial program and will be part of an interdisciplinary team with members of three other program areas including water resource management, land use planning and climate adaptation, and STEM education and local conservation. The individual will be responsible for various aspects of several new and existing education programs, including but not limited to overall program planning, workshop organization, workshop instruction including technical training, and coordinating with related programs. The individual will also perform mapping tasks to support a variety of projects including desktop GIS analysis, developing interactive online maps and story maps, identifying new technologies to meet emerging geospatial needs; assist in the development and creation of a project websites and project updates and reports, and other related tasks. The position will require occasional in- state travel (reimbursed at federal rates)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree in geospatial sciences, geography, natural resources management, or related field.
  • Experience and fluency in the field of geospatial technology.
  • Experience with geospatial data types, geospatial analysis and geospatial data presentation and visualization.
  • Demonstrated experience and proficiency with geospatial software/applications including GPS, ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Online.
  • Excellent oral, presentation, interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Experience in developing and delivering engaging educational presentations to diverse audiences.
  • Excellent organizational abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a team environment, as well as independently.
  • Ability to converse and present in English on the phone and in person with learners of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Experience with operating computers, tablets, smartphones and common software including Microsoft Office.
  • Must have transportation available to travel to various sites around the state.
  • Ability to participate in occasional evening or weekend meetings/workshops.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • 1-3 years of experience working in the geospatial field or in a natural resource field with extensive geospatial components.
  • Familiarity with environmental/natural resource management issues.
  • Experience in working with high school students and/or community land use officials.
  • Experience with ArcGIS Server, building and customizing web apps and other technical geospatial and computer-related skills.
  • Experience with website development including responsive and dynamic pages.
  • Experience with software and hardware configuration maintenance as it relates to geospatial applications.
  • Interest in and awareness of emerging mapping technologies.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time (100%) non-tenure track, 11 month position. This position is grant-funded and has an end-date that is subject to annual re-appointments contingent upon satisfactory performance and funding availability. This position includes an outstanding full benefit package including employee and dependent tuition waiver at UConn. Salary will be commensurate with successful candidate's background and experience.
