Overview

The Program Coordinator for Service Focus is a new position for a collaborative, relational, thoughtful and detail-oriented higher education professional committed to making service a central part of students' experience at Princeton University. This position is in response to the University's Service and Civic Engagement Self-Study Task Force which explored curricular and co-curricular initiatives to make service more integral to the Princeton experience. The Program Coordinator will be supervised by the Director of Service Focus, and will be a part of the Pace Center for Civic Engagement. Service Focus is a way for students to bridge service with learning, with a particular emphasis on the sophomore year. Service Focus is comprised of four key elements, including a paid summer service internship, service courses, faculty engagement, and cohort-based programming. With the Director, the Program Coordinator will recruit, assign, advise and mentor students in cohort-based peer groups and will support the Director in the development of cohort-based programming, service engagement through internships, the implementation and tracking of metrics, and ensuring the representation of multiple perspectives of service, and the inclusivity of the program.

This position is a three year term position, scheduled to run from 1/2018 - 1/2021.

Responsibilities

Core Duties and Responsibilities

Recruitment and program development (50%)

Support learning from service in cohort-based peer groups

With the goal of having up to 25% of first-year students participate in Service Focus in three years and up to 50% of first-year students involved in Service Focus in 10 years, the Program Coordinator will be responsible for developing and implementing a robust recruitment plan to attract a diverse group of first-year students to Service Focus. With the help of the Director of Service Focus, the Program Coordinator will assign all Service Focus students to participate in a cohort-based peer group. When Service Focus is fully up and running, the Program Coordinator will facilitate approximately 10-12 cohorts of 8-10 students over 18 months starting with the spring of the first year, moving into the summer internship and then into the fall and spring of the sophomore year. The Program Coordinator will assume administrative coordination of the cohorts, including keeping track of meeting schedules, scheduling workshops, coordinating with internship partners, and all other logistics. Cohorts will meet for approximately 2 hours once per month with the Program Coordinator, and individual students will meet with the Program Coordinator throughout the length of Service Focus. The Office of the Dean of the College will identify a faculty advisor for each cohort who will provide academic mentorship and will participate in approximately one cohort meeting per semester. The Program Coordinator will collaborate with ODOC in those efforts.

Student development and learning (25%)

Support the intentional learning from service through reflections, trainings and workshops

The Program Coordinator will coordinate the training logistics for Service Focus. The Program Coordinator will identify campus and community partner experts to collaborate with and to develop and facilitate relevant service-focused workshops and trainings. Developing the tools and pathways for preparation, embedded reflection, and critical thinking will be a significant element of this work. Emphasis will be on connecting these skills and tools to the summer internship experience, the sophomore year service course, and the curricular and co-curricular interests of the student. The Program Coordinator will also work with Pace Center staff to incorporate Service Focus students into the wider Pace Center trainings already in place.

Metrics (25%)

Track, implement, analyze and report on metrics

The Program Coordinator will work closely with the Director of Service Focus to develop an evaluation plan for the metrics for Service Focus. The Program Coordinator will ensure the collection and analysis of data, including student applications and selection to Service Focus, and service internships offered through campus partners. In addition, any relevant service-focused university-wide and national surveys will be identified as resources to metrics analysis and reporting. The Program Coordinator will liaise with the Office of the Dean of the College to ensure that data related to service courses and faculty engagement is connected to the Service Focus metrics.
