Mechanical Engineer, Research Associate-VTTI

Position Summary:
The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute ( VTTI ) seeks talented mechanical engineers, who enjoy solving complex problems.
Ideal candidate is a highly motivated engineer, expected to work independently and in a group environment. The applicant will be expected to work with mechanical and electrical systems, and be expected to work on multiple projects in a fast paced research environment.
Employee will utilize Solidworks to design and reverse engineer complex assemblies. Individual will contribute to conceptualizations, proposals, execution, and logistics to facilitate research addressing critical transportation knowledge gaps.
Projects focus on transportation research, but range from one-off vehicle installations to large scale coordinated efforts. Tasks focus on vehicle modification, research fixtures, and data collection devices. Research platforms include passenger cars, motorcycles, commercial heavy vehicles, and bicycles.
Experience with vehicle systems, complex assembly design, and rapid prototyping is preferred. The applicant must be interested in improving transportation safety
Assignments include:
-Handle multiple priorities.
-Interface with engineers, designers, and lab personnel.
-Research, design, and validate complex assemblies.
-Analyze problems, provide solutions, and provide support.
-Document designs, assembly procedures, and installation protocol.

Required Qualifications:
-Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent. Candidates with a lesser degree and significant experience in lieu of master's degree may be considered.
-Strong writing and organizational skills
-Solid understanding of engineering principles needed to design, fabricate, and validate work.
-Strong background in complex assembly design.
-Experience in material selection, and mechanical design principals
-Demonstrated computer modeling/computer aided design experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
-Preference given for transportation experience
-Preference for strong fabrication background
-Preferred Solidworks experience
-Knowledge of engineering best practice.
