Assistant Professor - Theology and Religious Studies


The Department of Theology and Religious Studies in St. John's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at St. John's University (New York) is seeking applicants for a full-time one-year contract faculty position at the rank of assistant professor, to begin in fall 2018.

The Department of Theology and Religious Studies

The Department of Theology and Religious Studies includes twenty full-time faculty and over thirty adjunct faculty. We serve undergraduate students in Queens, Staten Island, and on the university's global campuses, and offer a Master of Arts in Theology on our Queens campus and online. Our faculty members embrace the teacher-scholar ideal, maintaining active research agendas while delivering excellent instruction in the classroom. Over the years, several of our faculty members have been selected to participate in the nationally competitive summer workshops on teaching sponsored by the Wabash Center for Teaching and Learning in Theology and Religious Studies. Our faculty publish widely across a range a theological sub-disciplines. They participate actively in the American Academy of Religion, The Society of Biblical Literature, the Catholic Theological Society of America, College Theology Society, and the Society of Christian Ethics. In 2016, the Department secured a grant of nearly $600,000 from the Lily Foundation to establish the Vincentian Summer Leadership Institute, a summer program that brings high school students for a weeklong residential experience of service and theological education.

Description of Responsibilities:

We seek a scholar with strong interest and ability in undergraduate teaching, and specialization in theology and gender. Teaching load would include our introductory course (Perspectives on Christianity) and more specialized offerings. Teaching load for this position is 4-4.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess a terminal degree in theology by the time of the hire, evidence of teaching experience (e.g., a teaching portfolio), demonstrate potential for publication in refereed journals, and be committed to the university's Roman Catholic and Vincentian mission.
