Overview

Under the supervision of the Laboratory Animal Resources (LAR) Executive Director/University Attending Veterinarian, the Assistant Director, Veterinary Services will provide oversight of daily operations of the Veterinary Services team and management of all phases of veterinary care for University animals. In addition to supervisory and management responsibilities, the Assistant Director, Veterinary Services will oversee and provide support to the nonhuman primate surgical services team. The Assistant Director, Veterinary Services must have the highest standards of professional integrity and comply with all University policies and procedures, federal, state, and local regulations. This position offers professional development opportunities to attend selected regional and national meetings on laboratory animal science and medicine.

Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities include:
  • Management responsibility for clinical veterinary care of all laboratory animals, including aquatic species, rodents, reptiles and non-human primates (NHPs). The primary focus will be the oversight of NHPs and operations of a centralized surgical facility.
  • Veterinary consultation with Principal Investigators (PIs) and research staff
  • Supervision of the staff veterinarian and a portion of the veterinary technical and transgenic breeding staff responsible for providing clinical and technical services.
  • Oversight of all aspects of NHP colony health, including health surveillance and the preventative medicine program.
  • Working with the staff veterinarian, management of the NHP surgical and anesthesia program, including fluid therapy, pain management, perioperative monitoring, and emergency procedures in accordance with standard veterinary practices.
  • Review of NHP medical and research records as needed to ensure completeness of records.
  • Oversight of the Controlled Substances Program within LAR.
  • Routine review of best practices in the delivery of veterinary care, working with the Staff Veterinarian, to implement opportunities for continuous improvement when possible.
  • Participation in the planning and management of the LAR annual budget.
  • Provision of veterinary oversight for clinical care programs across all species, under the direction of the Attending Veterinarian, including regular consultation with researchers and their staff.
  • Assisting the LAR Executive Director with procedures and documents required to maintain compliance with the Animal Welfare Act, Public Health Service Policy, The Guide, and other applicable rules and regulations.
  • Shared veterinary on-call responsibility during evenings and weekends (approximately 40% of on call).
  • Collaboration on the development of animal care facilities processes and policies.
  • Participation, management and consultation on surgery, surgical techniques, and anesthesia
  • Performance of veterinary review and consultation with investigators for all IACUC protocols.
  • Development and delivery of training for LAR staff, PI's, research staff, and members of IACUC.
  • Composition, review and updating of veterinary and compliance policies, guidelines, and SOP's as required.
  • Oversight of quality assurance and disease surveillance programs.
  • Serving as the designee of the Attending Veterinarian as requested.
  • Representing the University as appropriate at internal/external meetings and venues.
  • Provision of input and writing of performance evaluations for assigned staff. Provision of input into hiring, termination and disciplinary actions for the team.
  • Provision of input to electronic database development.
  • Assistance with special projects and duties as necessary.

This position requires that the individual is willing and able to work with all species of laboratory animals, BSL-1 or BSL-2 level infectious agents, hazardous chemicals and radiation and use all appropriate safety measures in working with those agents.

Qualifications

Essential Qualifications

Candidate must have a Veterinary degree (D.V.M. /V.M.D.), be licensed to practice in at least one state, and be willing to obtain a veterinary license and USDA accreditation in New Jersey. Candidate must be a Diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM). Candidate must be knowledgeable of all applicable state, federal and local laws that regulate animal use in research. Candidate must have a minimum of 5 years' experience working in laboratory animal medicine. Candidate must have a minimum 3 years of relevant experience with NHPs in a surgical setting.

Competence in operating software programs (e.g., word processing, spreadsheets and databases) and excellent interpersonal, communication, problem-solving, and analytical skills are required. Flexibility, adaptability, and negotiation acumen are key traits necessary to the position. Candidate must be a skilled communicator with the ability to collaborate, supervise and motivate under stressful conditions. Candidate must be able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.

The final candidate will be required to successfully pass a background check.

Preferred Qualifications

Two or more years of supervisory experience

Experience with electronic protocol management systems (Topaz/Granite) and electronic medical records
